St. Louis Steamers News Release

Kansas City, MO – A three-goal outburst in the fourth quarter wasn't enough to put the Comets ahead tonight at Kemper Arena, as the team fell 8-6 to the St. Louis Steamers. The Comets are now 5-7, in the midst of a four-game losing streak. The Steamers improved to 12-6 and extended their first place standing atop the MISL. Injuries to several Comets left the team with a short bench. The team utilized newcomers Oswaldo Medina and Armando Valdivia, both making their debut with the club.

Chris Smith was in goal for St. Louis in place of Brett Phillips, who served a one-game suspension tonight. Jonny Steele took advantage of the back-up goalkeeper and recorded the first goal of the game at 7:32, which gave the Comets a 1-0 lead (Anthony Maher assist). The Steamers responded just seconds later when Joe Reiniger pounded away at the Comets goal. After being blocked by Sanaldo, Reiniger stayed with the ball and put it through at 7:45 to tie the game (1-1). After Valdivia was called for a tripping penalty at 12:27, Reiniger took a penalty kick against Comets goalkeeper Sanaldo. He converted the kick and produced the Steamers' first lead of the night (1-2). The Comets answered quickly at 13:00 when James Koehler and Miki Djerisilo teamed up to tie the game at two each as the first quarter expired.

The Steamers recorded the lone goal of the second quarter at 4:04 when Randy Soderman found Jeff DiMaria for the score and the 3-2 lead.

The relatively quiet second quarter gave way to a flurry of shot and scores in the second half as both teams began to test the two backup goalkeepers. Koehler and Djerisilo teamed up again at 3:40 of the third quarter. Koehler's second goal and Djerisilo's second assist of the evening tied the game at 3-3. After the tying score, the Steamers began a scoring run with an Ibrahim Kante unassisted goal at 5:10 from the top of box (3-4). A charging penalty on Anthony Maher gave St. Louis the first power play of the night, which the Steamers converted at 8:16. Mike Apple registered his first goal with an assist from Daryl Doran on that play (3-5). After Koehler and Djerisilo almost teamed up for yet another score, St. Louis' Aaron Susi took the ball from end-to-end and avoided Sanaldo to give the Steamers a 6-3 lead at 13:44.

The Comets rallied in the fourth quarter, using three goals in a span of two minutes to pull even at 6-6. Maher scored at 5:32 off of Djerisilo's third assist of the game (4-6). Justin Evans followed at 5:54 with help from Casey Stevens (5-6). The tying score came at 7:06 when Vlatko Andonovski's restart kick found Evans who connected for his second score of the game (6-6). St. Louis recaptured the lead for the final time at 8:26 when Shaun David overcame a second quarter injury to assist Sterling Wescott's first goal of the night (6-7). With a minute remaining, the Comets called timeout to pull Sanaldo and inserted Djerisilo as the sixth attacker. The move couldn't produce a game-tying score. St. Louis added an insurance goal at 14:29 when Daryl Doran knocked one past Djerisilo (6-8).
