Chicago Storm News Release

Chicago (Sunday, January 16, 2005) – The Chicago Storm dropped a 6-3 result this afternoon to the Kansas City Comets at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. The Comets scored six straight goals after the Storm pulled ahead 2-0 early in the game. Storm midfielder Andy Rosenband tallied a goal and an assist in the losing cause. The Storm dropped to 6-12 in the MISL and Kansas City improved to 6-6.

"We missed a lot of guys tonight," said Storm Head Coach Frank Klopas, referring to the eight Storm players missing today due to injuries and suspensions. "This is the type of game, where you want to see other guys step up and unfortunately we did not. We have to learn from this game and move forward. There is a lot of talent on this team and we have to do more of the little things that it takes to win games."

The Storm got off to a quick start in the first quarter after defender Gaston Pernia cleared a long pass to newcomer Jacob Ward. The former San Diego Sockers defender/midfielder found midfielder Andy Rosenband on a two-on-one breakaway. Rosenband buried a shot past Kansas City's goalkeeper Sanaldo to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Novi extended the Storm's lead to 2-0 after he dribbled the ball from the right wing towards the middle of the field and rifled a curling left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

Kansas City answered the Storm's goals with three of their own in the second quarter. K.C.'s Armando Valdivia scored with 9:26 remaining, but Miordrag Djerisilo and James Koehler tallied late in the stanza with 1:37 and 54 seconds remaining, respectively. The Comets shut down the Storm in the third quarter and added two more goals to extend the lead to 5-2 on Koehler's second of the game and another from Anthony Maher.

After Kansas City scored their sixth straight of the afternoon from Vlatko Andonovski, the Storm fought back. Chicago was able to cut into the lead when Lazo Alavanja rocketed a shot into the top left corner to make it 6-3. The Storm added Novi as the sixth attacker to continue the pressure on the Comets' defense, but the effort came up empty.

Chicago launched 22 shots at Kansas City, but Sanaldo was able to close the door on the Storm in a contest that saw the Storm without eight players. Captain Ted Chronopoulos (on injured reserve due to a broken cheekbone), Costea Decu (on injured reserve due to a stress fracture in his right leg), Awadalla Morad (on injured reserve due to hernia procedure), Leo Pernia (knee injury) and Andy Guastaferro (abdominal strain) were missing due to injury. Byron Alvarez, Tijani Ayegbusi and Mark Ughy did not play today due to red card suspensions picked up last week in a game at St. Louis when the trio were identified by referees in a post-game fight.

The Storm will continue their six-game home stand next Friday, January 21, when they face-off against the Cleveland Force at 7:30 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion. This will be the third match between the two teams with the Force leading the season series 2-1. This game can be heard live on www.chicagostorm.net with Storm play-by-play announcer Kenn Tomasch calling all of the action.
