Columbus' Shannon Szabados Named Easton Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (December 2, 2014) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender Shannon Szabados of the Columbus Cottonmouths is the Easton Player of the Week for November 24-30.

After earning her first professional win the week before, Szabados went 2-0-0 with a 1.49 goals against average and a .963 save percentage in helping Columbus extend their winning streak to six games.

On Tuesday, the Edmonton, AB native stopped 35 of 36 Fayetteville shots and assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime as Columbus defeated the FireAntz 2-1. Szabados came back on Saturday with another impressive performance, making 42 saves in Columbus' 3-2 road win over the Mississippi RiverKings.

Including her two Olympic gold medals, Szabados has won 11 gold and six silver medals in international competition for Canada since 2006. Prior to breaking ground by becoming the first woman to play in the SPHL, Szabados became the first female to play in the Western Hockey League in 2012 when she appeared in a preseason game for the Tri-City Americans where she shared time with current Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price.
