Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – The Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League have scheduled a one day open-player tryout to be held at the Columbus FieldHouse on Saturday, June 25 at 8:30 a.m., Head Coach Chris Spielman announced today.

"We have had some very talented players participate in the open tryouts that we've had in the past," explained Spielman. "Brandon Hefflin, who ended up starting at defensive specialist for us last season, is a guy that we found at an open workout and he ended up being one of our top defensive players."

Hefflin was one of over 100 hopefuls who attended a Destroyers open tryout last fall. He made an impression on Spielman and his coaching staff before eventually signing a free agent contract with the team. Hefflin finished his rookie season in the AFL as the Destroyers' top defensive player, leading the team in tackles (76.5), interceptions (2), forced fumbles (3), fumble recoveries (2) and was second on the team in pass deflections with 13.

All Destroyers football candidates should come dressed in non-contact football attire and are encouraged to wear the appropriate shoes for running on FieldTurf. There will be no helmets or shoulder pads in the workout. Potential players will go through various non-contact drills such as a 40-yard dash, short shuttle as well as position-specific drills. The tryout will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. and run until noon. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Cost for the tryout is $65 per person by pre-registering online at www.ColumbusDestroyers.com. All Pre-registration forms must be faxed to Matt Tremblay at (614) 246-4300 or dropped off at the Destroyers' front office in Nationwide Arena by 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. Prospective players who do not pre-register online may also register on the day of the tryout at the Columbus FieldHouse at $75 per person. For more information, please call (614) 246-2000.
