Columbus Destroyers game notes

May 5, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release

QUICK FACTS:
Columbus Destroyers (4-8) vs
Georgia Force (4-8)
Date: Sunday, May 9, 2004
Kickoff: 3:00 p.m. (ET)
Site: Nationwide Arena (17,171)
Officials: Craig Wrolstad (Referee), Rick Lowe (Umpire), Gary Cavaletto (Head Linesman), Rusty Baynes (Line Judge), Scott Helverson (Back Judge)
Radio: Columbus' flagship station WAZU-107.1 FM "The Big Wazoo" will broadcast the game live with Marty Bannister handling the play-by-play duties and Greg Frey supplying color commentary.
Series Record: The Destroyers have split the series with the Force at one win apiece. The last time the two teams met the Destroyers bested the Force by 20 points, 63-43 in Georgia. The teams first met in 2002 when the Force came out ahead 54-33.
Series Streaks: The Destroyers won the last meeting, hoping to start a streak this week. Georgia won the meeting two seasons ago so no streaks have been set.
Coaches: Destroyers, Earle Bruce (4-8 in 2004, 17-24 overall). Georgia, Bob Kronenberg (0-1 in 2004, 0-1 overall).

OVERVIEW: The Columbus Destroyers kicked off their inaugural season with a win in Indiana, but fell into a six game skid resulting in a 1-6 record after seven weeks of play. After their bye week in week eight, though, the Destroyers have come on strong, winning three of their last five games. Both teams, the Destroyers and the Georgia Force enter this week's match at the bottom of their divisions but fighting their way back. The Destroyers jumped top an early lead last week against the Carolina Cobras and were able to stay just beyond striking distance to hang on for a win 60-52. The Force, in a sense, started anew two weeks ago in Interim Head Coach Bob Kronenberg's first game as a head coach. The Force fell to San Jose 63-34 and are in the midst of a six game losing streak. The Force, though, have had a week off to refresh and will try to end the streak.

THE SERIES: The Destroyers and Force have met a total of twice, the Force winning the first meeting, the Destroyers winning the last. Both of the previous contests have taken place in Georgia, the first of which resulted in a 54-33 Georgia Force win in 2002. Last season the Destroyers beat the Force 63-43 to cap off a three game winning streak. A win this week for the Destroyers would give them a two game win streak against the Force and a one game advantage in the series.

LAST WEEK: An onside kick after the opening touchdown of the game proved to be the crushing blow that the Destroyers needed to go ahead and stay that way, last week when they traveled to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Cobras. Columbus recovered the kick after eroding six minutes off the clock and scoring the game's opening touchdown on a three-yard run by FB/LB Richard McCleskey for his first touchdown of the season. The recovery resulted in a 34-yard flea-flicker from OS Sedrick Robinson to OL/DL LaKendrick Jones. Robinson led the Destroyers offensively with a rushing touchdown, two touchdown receptions and passed for one gaining 272 all-purpose yards, 152 of them coming in receiving yards. He also returned six kickoffs for 108 yards and gained 12 yards on the ground. QB Ryan Vena completed 17 of his 21 pass attempts, four of them finding their way past the pylons, for 236 yards. Kicker Steve Videtich was on top of his game, kicking 100 percent, seven for seven on PATs and three for three on field goals including a 56 yarder. QB Rickey Foggie led the Cobras, 22 of his 30 passes found their mark for 232 yards and six touchdowns. WR/LB Damien Groce was the leading receiver for Carolina, catching five balls for 67 yards and two touchdowns. After going up 14-0, the Destroyers would never look back. The Cobras climbed to within four points after a touchdown, which was the result of a Vena fumble, with 1:27 left in the half. The Destroyers would go on to score 12 points in the remaining minute-and-a-half, off a touchdown, safety and a 42-yard boot by Videtich to go to the locker room with their largest halftime lead of the season. Carolina came into the second half with a vengeance outscoring Columbus 14-3 in the first 10 minutes of the half. The comeback was short lived as Vena connected with Robinson for a 45-yard score to leave a little more cushion. The Cobras would eventually get back to a six-point deficit but could not crack the Destroyers' lead. The win gave the Destroyers their fourth win of the season and their second road win. Since their bye week, the Destroyers are 3-2 trying to nullify the 1-6 record they accumulated beforehand.

NEXT WEEK: The Destroyers will be waiting after this week's match-up with the Force for the Grand Rapids Rampage to arrive in Columbus. The Destroyers and Rampage will go toe-to-toe on Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Nationwide Arena.
LAST SERIES MEETING: The Destroyers vanquished the Force last season 63-43 at Georgia. The win was the first time the Destroyers had beaten the Force.

THE COACHES:
Columbus – Earle Bruce, 4th season (1st with Destroyers) 4-8 in 2004; 17-24 overall
Earle Bruce returns to the Area Football League as head coach and general manager for the Columbus Destroyers. Bruce landed his first collegiate head-coaching job at the University of Tampa in 1972, where he fashioned a 10-2 record, including a win in the Tangerine Bowl. He took over at Iowa State University from 1973-1978, where he guided the Cyclones to eight wins in each of his last three seasons. Bruce succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record from 1979-1987 in Columbus. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles (1979, 1984) and two co-championships (1981, 1986) and was named the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Following his tenure in Columbus, Bruce coached at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 before taking over the Colorado State University program from 1989-92. He led the Rams to their best season in school history, a 9-4 record that included a win in the Freedom Bowl. Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the St. Louis Stampede, making theirs the best record of an expansion football team at 9 and 4 and taking them to the playoffs. In 2001 Bruce coached the Iowa Barnstormers in the AF2 League.

Georgia – Bob Kronenberg, 1st season (1st with Force) 0-1in 2004; 0-1 overall
Bob Kronenberg took over the head-coaching job as the interim head coach on April 19, when Marty Lowe was relieved of his duties. He has served as Assistant head coach for the Force for the last three seasons focusing on the offensive and defensive lines. At the ripe age of 32, he is the second youngest head coach in the AFL. Kronenberg had a successful professional career himself as a lineman, having stints in AFL, NFL Europe where he won a world title in 1998 as a member of the Rhein Fire, CFL and NFL. He played his college ball at St. Cloud State in Minnesota where he was an All-North Central Conference lineman.

INJURY REPORT:. In week two wide receiver/defensive back Jason Collins-Baker suffered a season-ending torn ACL. In week four, in the Dallas game, Antwon Jones suffered a sprained knee, leaving him on IR for the foreseeable future. Kelron Sykes was placed on IR after hyper extending his knee versus Orlando. Defensive specialist Chris Angel was placed on IR after having surgery to repair a thumb injury suffered in practice, and offensive/defensive lineman Marcus McKenzie was placed on IR after suffering a broken bone in his hand April 10 versus New York. Wood suffered an ankle injury two weeks ago versus Tampa Bay.

LEAGUE HONORS
On Tuesday, Columbus Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Sedrick Robinson was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Week by the Arena Football League for week thirteen of the regular season. Robinson played a vital role in the Destroyers' 60-52 victory over the Carolina Cobras last Saturday night at the Charlotte Coliseum, finishing the contest with a game-high six catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown and passing for a score. Robinson also excelled on defense and special teams play, igniting the Destroyers' return game with six kick returns for 108 yards, giving him 272 all-purpose yards in the game. Defensively, Robison registered two solo tackles. On the season, Robinson is the Destroyers' second-leading receiver, having recorded 50 catches for 712 yards and 12 touchdowns. In addition, he has returned 49 kickoffs for 1,016 and two touchdowns, giving him a team-high 1,762 all-purpose yards this season (6th in AFL). A four-year veteran of the Arena Football League, this is the fifth time Robinson has garnered an AFL weekly award and second time this season that a Destroyers player has been honored by the league.

54-POINT LINE
The Columbus Destroyers have not lost a game when they have scored 54 points or higher. Two of those have come with scores of 60 or more. The Destroyers have lost only once if they score more that 46. That loss came at the Hand of the Carolina Cobras when they lost by one point on the last play of the game. Every game when they have scored fewer than 54 points, the Destroyers have come out on the bottom of the pile.

CONVERTED FULLBACK
Richard McCleskey spent most of the season as an offensive and defensive lineman. Last week, though, he was the starting FB/LB. He rumbled for 15 yards on three carries scoring his first touchdown of the season on a two-yard run for the opening score of the game. He also caught two passes for 18 yards to finish with 33 all-purpose yards.

SECRET PASSER
Sedrick Robinson has been a thorn in the sides of defensive coordinators receiving, rushing and returning kickoffs. Robinson is also, though, the team's highest rated passer at 149.3. He is two for three on the season with two touchdowns and 46 yards.

DOUBLE THREAT
In a pass-dominated league, Destroyers quarterback Ryan Vena has proven to be a true double threat, moving his team downfield with his legs as well as his arm. Vena currently leads the Destroyers rushing attack, having gained 143 yards on 46 carries. He also leads the team in rushing touchdowns with eight on the season.

MOVIN' ON UP
In his rookie season with the Destroyers, Quarterback Ryan Vena has quickly ascended towards the top of the Destroyers' all-time rushing list for a single season as well as career. In only 10 games of action, Vena is currently fourth all-time in Destroyers history with 143 yards rushing and with his last score two weeks ago versus Tampa Bay, moved him up to fourth all-time in rushing touchdowns with eight on the season. Vena's 143 yards gained on the ground is only 17 short of the all-time record for rushing yards in a single season (160/Tony Burse-1999).

DESTROYERS ALL-TIME LEADING RUSHERS
Player/Years Yards Touchdowns
David White/2000 223 13
Tony Burse/1999-2001 179 11
Juan Long/2000-03 157 7
Ryan Vena/2004 143 8

FACEOFF WITH FIRST TIME COACH
The Columbus Destroyers will face a coach they have never faced before this Sunday in Bob Kronenberg. Sunday will be Kronenberg's second game ever as a head coach. Kronenberg took over the job after Marty Lowe was released after a five game losing streak; in his last game the Force scored only one touchdown losing 30-7. Kronenberg didn't fair very well in his debut. Georgia was routed by one of the top teams in the league, San Jose, 63-34.

THE TURNOVER TREND
Four. That is the number of games the Destroyers have won when they win the turnover battle. The Destroyers are 0-5 when they lose it. Every single one of their wins has come when the loose balls have rolled their way, further proving that the team that wins turnovers wins games.
