Colts trade centerfielder Tyrone Pendergrass

The San Angelo Colts have traded centerfield Tyrone Pendergrass to the Schaumburg Flyers in the Northern League for a player to be named later. "Tyrone had an opportunity to be closer to his home in Connecticut where he is currently moving, and for the first time in long time play near his family", said Colts Skipper Doc Edwards. Pendergrass, a speedy switch-hitting centerfielder hit .281 with 4 homeruns and 36 RBIs, while playing for the San Angelo last season. Tyrone also lead the United League in triples (6), was 5th in stolen bases (27), and 4th in runs scored (71).
Pendergrass, who has played a dozen years in professional baseball, will be entering his 13th year in 2007. In the 2006 season, Tyrone reached two major milestones on consecutive days. On August 11, he played in his 1000th game as a pro, and on August 12 tallied his 1000th career hit. Tyrone also hit a mini-milestone when he stole the 350th base of his career. Pendergrass was great in the playoffs as well, going 6-9 for San Angelo in the United League Semi-Finals.
Pendergrass was originally signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Braves in 1995, and later was picked up in the Rule 5 Draft by the Chicago Whitesox in 1998, after stealing 70 bases in the Sally League the year before. Tyrone came as close as you can come to the majors after being called up to the big leagues but was never actually placed on the roster. Pendergrass made it back as high as AAA playing in the International League for Richmond in 2000, but never got back to the big leagues. Pendergrass than began his career in independent ball the very next season. In 2001, Pendergrass also had his first experience playing in Texas when he played for Rio Grande, and led the Texas/Louisiana League in stolen bases with 52, while hitting .332, and had an OBP% of .429. Pendergrass also played ball in Texas for El Paso in 2005, before joining the Colts in 2006. Last season was also not the first time he played for former major leaguer Doc Edwards either, Pendergrass played for Doc from 2002-2003 at Sioux Falls.
The San Angelo Colts are part of six-team league that make up United League Baseball. The independent league has teams located in San Angelo, Laredo, Amarillo, Edinburg, and Rio Grand Valley Texas as well as Alexandria Louisiana, and began play in the 2006 season.
