Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- The battle between the top two teams in the Central Division went in favour of the Barrie Colts, 5-2 tonight at the Hershey Centre. The Colts came to Mississauga tonight with a one point lead over the Majors in the Central Division and Eastern Conference, they leave with a three point advantage. The loss drops the Majors to 19-5-2-0 on the season.
The Colts took it to the Majors in the opening minutes of the game and capitalized on a giveaway just over four minutes into the game when Stefan Della Rovere put Barrie ahead 1-0. The Majors had their chances but if they didn't end with a ringing sound off the post, they were saved by Colts goaltender Dalton McGrath. The Colts goaltender made some key saves on what looked to be sure Majors goals. Devante Smith-Pelly was robbed on a couple chances in the period and the Majors failed to score on a five-on-three advantage to close an entertaining opening twenty minutes.
The second period would not provide the same excitement as the first did; but a key save once again by McGrath kept the Majors off the score sheet, when he just got his blocker on Blake Parlett's shot late in the period.
Darren Archibald put the Colts ahead by two just over a minute into the final period. McGrath continued to stop the Majors offensive assault with big saves. Tim Billingsley was called for tripping, in what looked to be a poor call by the officials. The call came back to haunt the Majors as Archibald struck again for his second on the night. Devante Smith-Pelly drew the Majors within two on the power play. Archibald scored his third of the game at 11:33 putting Barrie ahead 4-1. The Majors power play unit tried to pull Mississauga back in when Kelly Geoffrey scored his second of the season. Alex Hutchings then added another Colts goal that took a bad bounce and beat JP Anderson.
Dalton McGrath made 40 saves in a winning effort. JP Anderson didn't have his best night in net and countered with 24 saves for the Majors. Archibald received "First Star" honours, McGrath and Gaunce were second and third respectively. The Majors will host the Guelph Storm on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and then hit the road next week for three games.
