San Angelo Colts News Release

Abilene, Texas --- A throwing error and a wild pitch allowed the Colts to defeat the Abilene Prairie Dogs, 5-4, in 12 innings Tuesday night at Walt Driggers Field.

Designated hitter Daryl Jones scored the go-ahead run from third on a wild pitch by Abilene reliever Jeremy Tietze. Jones drew a two-out walk and then stole second base. The throw to second by catcher Zach Welch sailed into centerfield, allowing Jones to reach third on an error. The Colts did not record a hit in the 12th inning.

Tietze (1-2) took the loss, allowing an unearned run on a pair of walks in one inning of relief. Prairie Dogs' starter Woods Fines gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings and settled for a no decision.

The Colts led 3-2 entering the eighth, but a two-run homer by Prairie Dogs' designated hitter Kyle Nichols, his sixth of the year, flipped the script.

An RBI infield single in the ninth by centerfielder Ronnie Gaines evened the game and sent it into extra innings. The hit scored first baseman Ryan Hutson, who drew a leadoff walk and reached second on a wild pitch.

San Angelo's bullpen was stellar in the extra innings. Reliever Russell Johns (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first career win. Closer Erik Draxton tossed a perfect ninth, and collected his league-best 11th save.

The win gives the Colts (21-17) a season-high six-game winning streak, and their second series sweep of the year. Meanwhile, the loss drops Abilene to 15-23.

The Colts begin a five-game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Wednesday in Harlingen. The game can be heard live on KKSA beginning at 6:20 p.m.

The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
