(Barrie, ON) - The Barrie Colts downed the Saginaw Spirit 6-1 in Barrie Saturday night. The Colts took advantage of two shorthanded goals in the effort. Barrie opened scoring in the first period, when defenseman Todd Perry scored on the powerplay at 4:54. Barrie jumped up 2-0 early in the second period, when defenseman Nicholas Plastino scored shorthanded just :42 seconds in. Forward Travis Fuller scored on a break-away at 5:15 to give the Colts a 3-0 lead. Standout forward Bryan Little made it 4-0 shorthanded at 14:02 of the second.

The Spirit got on the board at 4:42 of the third period, when forward Joe McCann stripped a Barrie defender and broke in to beat Colts goalie Dan LaCosta (CBJ '04). Barrie answered twice more at 9:09 from Vladimir Nikiforov and a goal that went in off a Spirit stick, credited as a powerplay goal to Matthieu Methot at 13:47.

Spirit goaltender Francois Thuot stopped 46 shots on the night. The loss takes Saginaw's record to 20-15 on the season, good for 40 points and second place in the OHL West Division. World Junior Update: Canada downs Team USA

Spirit forward Tom Pyatt and his team Canada teammates downed Team USA 3-2 in World Junior action Saturday night. Pyatt has one assist in the tournament. Spirit forward Michal Birner and his Czech teammates defeated Slovakia 5-3 Friday night. Birner assisted for his first point of the tournament. The Czechs play team Russia Saturday night. U-17 Challenge Update: Torquato Scores for Ontario

Spirit forward Zack Torquato and Team Ontario fell to Team USA 7-5 Friday night. Torquato has one assist in the tournament. Team Ontario resumes action Sunday against Slovakia. Follow complete action at www.hockeycanada.ca.
