The Tusculum University product, attempted just four passes during the regular season, but was ready when called upon by Vipers head coach Dean Cokinos. "Tony was outstanding in the ArenaCup and has a good grasp of the offense. He is the ultimate team player, "said Cokinos.
Other players who were assigned to the Vipers include 2008 returnees, Lance Ancar, Benji McDowell, and Darren Garrigan. Ancar, who missed the last half of the season with injury, saw action at the fullback position and finished the regular season with 12 carries for 54 yards, and three touchdowns. "These guys were all key contributors in our Championship season in 2008," Cokinos said, "Furthermore they are all relatively young and upcoming players."
McDowell, who played his college football at Lenoir-Rhyne from 2003-2006, filled in at the fullback position after Ancar's injury and recorded 13 carries for 52 yards and five touchdowns. His best game rushing came on July 19th at Florida. McDowell carried the ball seven times for 41 yards and two scores in the Vipers 58-28 victory. "Lance and Benji are such consistent, reliable, and versatile big men. They are invaluable", said Cokinos.
Garrigan, who was assigned to the Vipers on July 10, became a very reliable part of the Vipers secondary. He finished the regular season with 23.5 tackles, and came up big in the postseason with 19 tackles, and nine passes defended. "Darren has unlimited potential," Cokinos said. "He is a flat out cover guy who is still learning this game."
The Vipers were also assigned Alton Pettway. Pettway, who played at Albany State University from 2004-2006, finished he collegiate career with 116 tackles. 24.5 sacks, and 37 tackles for loss. The 6-1 272 pound defensive lineman was named as a Harlon Hill Trophy Finalist in 2006, and also was named the Albany State Male Athlete of the Year. "I am very excited about Pettway joining us as he is a diverse pass rusher who has the ability to use speed and power, a deadly combination for a defensive lineman," said Cokinos.
