THE GAME:

The Colorado Crush return home after almost a month on the road following three consecutive away contests to host the Columbus Destroyers on Friday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m. The all-time series between the Crush and Destroyers is tied 1-1 as both games have been played at Pepsi Center. Last season, Columbus pounded Colorado for a 65-21 victory on March 25th.

Colorado has been playing their best football recently winning four out of their last five games, including an impressive 57-35 victory over the Nashville Kats last Friday. The team's recently success has been a direct result of their defensive play.

In Colorado's last five games played, the defensive unit has amassed 11 interceptions and nine sacks. The Crush secondary led by DB Rashad Floyd currently leads the AFL in tackles with 113 on the year, while teammate Chris Angel ranks second in the League with seven interceptions. Up front, three Crush players- Dustin Barno, Anthony Dunn and Saul Patu- each have registered 3.5 sacks this season. In the Crush's win over Nashville, the team set a new club-record with five sacks.

The Columbus Destroyers come into Friday night's game winners of four of their last five games as well. However, the Destroyers this season have played much better at home than on the road as they have dropped three consecutive road games.

The Destroyers are paced by a strong defense and excellent special teams play. Columbus carries the League's fourth best scoring defense only allowing 47.9 points per game led by DL Ken Jones, who is first in the AFL with 12 tackles for loss and second in sacks with 8.5. Columbus DB Jerald Brown is also the reigning AFL Defensive Player of the Year. Special teams however has been the Destroyers game changing trump card as they lead the AFL in kickoff return yards averaging 21.3 yards per return and have scored four touchdowns in the return game this year.

HEAD COACHES:

MIKE DAILIEY, Colorado (106-68, 11th Year): Mike Dailey enters his fourth season in Colorado and 11th as head coach in the AFL, after becoming the Crush's second head coach on June 26, 2003. Dailey joined the Crush following 13 seasons in the Albany/Indiana Firebirds organization, including the final seven as head coach.

One of the most successful and well-respected coaches in AFL history, Dailey's teams have compiled an overall record of 106-68 record, a winning percentage of 61.0. His teams have also made eight postseason appearances and he has won five division titles and two championships. Following the Crush's 44-40 victory over Kansas City on March 10, 2007, Dailey became only the fourth head coach in AFL history to surpass the 100 win mark. He currently stands as the league fourth all-time winningest coach.

In his first season in Colorado, Dailey helped guide the Crush to the largest turnaround in AFL history, inheriting a 2-14 team and leading them to an 11-5 record in 2004. In 1999, Dailey led the Albany Firebirds to their only ArenaBowl championship and was named AFL Coach of the Year. Before being named head coach of the Firebirds in 1997, Dailey served as an assistant in Albany for five seasons.

Dailey began his AFL coaching career with the Washington Commandos where he served as offensive/defensive line coach in 1990. He joined the Firebirds organization in the same capacity in 1991.

Prior to the AFL, Dailey worked as an assistant coach at Towson State University and was the offensive coordinator at Montgomery College-Rockville (Md.). Dailey got his start in coaching in 1981 as a 22-year-old assistant at Georgetown Prep High School in Rockville, Md. The move to coaching followed a semi-pro football career in the Washington D.C. area.

DOUG KAY, Columbus (14-12, 2nd Year): Doug Kay was named head coach of the Columbus Destroyers on July 14, 2005. Kay became the third coach in Columbus Destroyers history and sixth in the Buffalo/Columbus franchise history.

In his first season at the helm, Kay guided the Destroyers to their best record in franchise history, while setting a franchise record for road wins in the process. He also guided the club to four home victories, which tied a franchise record.

With only three players returning from the 2005 squad, Kay led the Destroyers to the biggest turnaround of any Arena Football team from the 2005 season to the 2006 campaign. Columbus improved to 8-8 in 2006 after a 2-14 season in 2005.

Kay has more than 40 years of football experience including 12 seasons in the Arena Football League. Overall Kay's teams have made the postseason in 10 of his 13 AFL seasons.

His AFL experience began in 1993 as defensive coordinator of the ArenaBowl VII champion Tampa Bay Storm. Four years later, Kay was once again defensive coordinator of a championship team, helping the Arizona Rattlers capture ArenaBowl XI in 1997.

Kay is guiding his third club in the AFL. He was head coach of the Charlotte Rage in 1995 and returned to Charlotte as the head coach of the Carolina Cobras in 2000 and 2001. Prior to the AFL, Kay spent four seasons in the United States Football League with Boston/New Orleans Breakers and Tampa Bay Bandits.

Kay's coaching career began in 1960 at his alma mater, Western Illinois, as the quarterback's and wide receivers coach. In 1961, Kay took over at Deerfield (Ill.) High School and coached there through the 1966 season.

From 1967-1969 Kay served as the defensive coordinator at Indiana State University. Kay was then named the head coach of Olivet (Mich.) College in 1970. He spent the next six seasons with Olivet before taking over as the offensive coordinator at San Jose State in 1976.

Kay moved to UCLA in 1977 where he was an assistant coach, working mainly with the linebackers and defensive line. In 1980, he took over at the University of Hawaii as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for three seasons.

LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET:

DENVER (3/25/06) - A blowout loss like the 65-21 defeat the Crush suffered Saturday night to the Columbus Destroyers is absorbed at a stately, almost deliberate pace, which makes it perhaps the most frustrating kind of defeat of all.

It's not like a plunge into boiling water, but rather more like a dip into lukewarm liquid that slowly, surely boils, to the point where by the time you know it's too hot for survival, it's too late to escape.

It was a night that started badly -- with back-to-back interceptions on the Crush's opening two drives -- and only got worse from there, as a season-high crowd of 17,416 watched the Crush allow 27 unanswered points in the second quarter to fall behind 34-7 at halftime.

By the time the defeat was complete, the Crush had scored fewer points (21) than ever before.

The Crush also turned the ball over more times (seven) than ever before in franchise history.

Colorado's turnover tally included three interceptions off Dutton's arm and four fumbles.

Credit was also due to Columbus, which has emerged with four wins in its last five games. The team's defensive effort was not a fluke; the Destroyers held the Philadelphia Soul to 20 points last week.

CRUSH LAST WEEK:

NASHVILLE (5/11/07) - Playing their second game in just five days the Colorado Crush sweep the season series from the Nashville Kats with a 57-35 victory on Friday night. The 22-point win was the Crush's largest of the season. In victory, the Crush set a new team record for sacks in the game with five and also added three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Colorado QB John Dutton, named Offensive Player of the Game, finished with 259 passing yards on 27-of-44 throws with six touchdowns and contributed with one rushing score. Crush WR Brad Pyatt registered game-highs with nine receptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns. For Nashville, QB Jeff Smoker recorded four touchdown strikes on 14-of-37 passes for 196 with the three picks.

Colorado used an almost perfect first half to build a 27 point lead to start the game. The Crush began with touchdowns from Pyatt and Dutton, on a 14-yard pass and two-yard rush respectively, to jump out 13-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Nashville offense looked to be out of sorts all night as the Colorado defense forced stops on the Kats first three possessions. Nashville would not find the scoreboard till 3:29 left in the half as Smoker found WR Kenny Higgins on a nine-yard touchdown pass. Both teams would add an additional score as the Crush took a 30-14 lead into the half.

Nashville trimmed the Colorado lead to nine points, 30-21, to begin the second half on a 35-yard WR Maurice Brown touchdown reception, but that is all the closer the Kats would come. Between a WR Alzono Nix 23-yard score and a 22-yard WR Damian Harrell touchdown, the Crush special teams recovered a kickoff fumble by Nashville to push the score to 44-21.

Colorado defensive backs Chris Angel and Rashad Floyd would each haul in interceptions in the fourth period as the Crush would captured their second win to close out their recent three-game Central Division road swing.

THINGS TO WATCH:

YOUNG BLOOD:

The Colorado Crush took the field in Week 1 with four rookies on their active roster. Not since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival to Colorado in 2004 has he had that many first-year players on his Crush active roster to begin a season.

The Crush currently have five rookies on their active roster with four of those players starting.

LOCAL TIES:

This season the Crush have found a lot of good-young talent right in their back yard. Here is a list of players that have Colorado ties:

- DL QUINN DORSEY attended Manual High School in Denver.

- FB/LB ANTHONY DUNN attended Centauri High School in Manassa, CO and later played at the University of Northern Colorado.

- OL BRETT HUYSER played his collegiate football at the Air Force Academy.

- WR BRAD PYATT has played football at all three levels of his career in Colorado (Arvada West High School, Northern Colorado and the Crush).

BUILDING A WINNING TRADITION:

The Crush are the winningest team in the AFL regular season since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival, having tied for the league's best record in 2004 (11-5) and finishing with the American Conference's top seed in 2005 (10-6) and 2006 (11-5).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH:

After finishing their inaugural season 0-8 at home, the Crush are now 25-6 under Mike Dailey (2-1 in the postseason) at Pepsi Center. Two of the six losses consist of a field goal in overtime (42-45) vs. Indiana in 2004 and a 51-48 Chicago win in 2005 on a field goal with three seconds remaining.

LET'S MAKE IT THREE:

Last season, Colorado was the only team to repeat as a division champion. This year, they'll look to become the first team since the New York Dragons (2003-2005) to repeat as divisional champions in three consecutive seasons.

HE KEEPS GOING & GOING & GOING....:

A true AFL Ironman, Kyle Moore-Brown is in his 13th season in the league and has never missed a game. ArenaBowl XIX marked his AFL record 176th consecutive start. The first 139 all came with the Firebirds organization before he signed with the Crush prior to the 2004 season. Kyle's career milestone of 200 came against the New York Dragons on April 15, 2007.

STEEL CURTAIN:

After allowing 14 sacks in 2003 (12 on Dutton), the Crush pass protection has been stellar under head coach Mike Dailey.

The team allowed just four sacks in 2004, and none after Week 6. In 2005, Colorado allowed just six sacks, while holding 10 opponents sackless on the year.

Since 2004, the Crush have allowed just 22 sacks in their last 49 regular season games (total of 2,370 plays).

IT'S NOT OVER TILL IT'S OVER:

Since head coach Mike Dailey has arrived in Colorado in 2004, the Crush have claimed victory in the final minute of the game in seven contests.

2004

- vs. Las Vegas (2/6)- QB John Dutton tosses two touchdown passes to WR Damian Harrell in the final 12 seconds to give Colorado a stunning 43-42 victory.

- at Detroit (5/23)- QB John Dutton found WR/DB Willis Marshall for a 10-yard touchdown pass with one second on the clock as the Crush won 45-42.

2005

- vs. Nashville (5/13)- K Clay Rush splits the uprights on a 31-yard field goal as time expires to give Colorado a 52-49 win.

- vs. Georgia (6/12)- K Clay Rush connects on a 20-yard field goal as time expires to give the Crush a 56-48 victory in ArenaBowl XIX.

2006

- vs. Chicago (1/29)- QB John Dutton hits WR Damian Harrell for a touchdown with one second remaining as the Crush go on to win 65-56.

- at Georgia (2/5)- QB John Dutton finds WR Damian Harrell for a 13-yard touchdown with 45 seconds left to lift Colorado to a 61-59 victory.

2007

- vs. Nashville (4/1)- Down by seven points (41-48) with 50 seconds left, Crush FB/LB Robert Thomas blocks a Kats 30-yard field goal attempt as Colorado scores four plays later to tie the game 48-48. Then Crush DB Chris Angel intercepts a Nashville pass with 32 seconds left and returns it to the Kats one-yard line. Thomas rushes in with six seconds remaining to lift Colorado to a 55-48 victory.
