RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES
GAME NIGHT PREVIEW
Colorado Eagles (21-5-5) @ Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (11-18-2)
DATE: 1/14/05 TIME: 7:30 pm LOCATION: Dodge Arena (Hidalgo, Tx)
THE EAGLES HAVE LANDED
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees complete the All-Star Break by returning to the ice tonight to host the Colorado Eagles. The Eagles come into the Dodge Arena with an explosive squad that has a CHL co-leading winning percentage (75.8%) and are the hottest team in the league coming off the break with a four-game winning streak. The Bees are looking to obtain a standing point in their fourth consecutive contest, after going 2-0-1 in last weekend's action. Tonight begins a three-in-three weekend for both squads, as the Bees have a home-and-home series with Austin starting tomorrow night, while the Eagles head to Laredo on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend in Corpus Christi.
THE SERIES
The Killer Bees and the Eagles meet for the third time this season, fourth all-time, and the Eagles return to the Dodge Arena for the first time this season (second all-time). There is rugged history between the two second year franchises. The Killer Bees are winless (0-3-0) all-time against the Eagles and the previous two meetings this season left a sour taste in their mouth. Colorado defeated the Bees 7-1 on November 12th and 6-0 on November 13th, and the two games combined for eight fights (5 on 11/13). Eagles all-star forward Greg Pankewicz leads the season series with 9 points (3g,6a,9pts.) in the two games, while the Bees have a trio of players with one point. Colorado visited the Dodge Arena last season (12/7/03) and shutout the Bees 2-0.
THE LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING
11/14/04 - Colorado Eagles forwards Greg Pankewicz and Riley Nelson each contributed a pair of goals and three assists for five-point performances to give the Eagles a 6-0 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at a sold-out Budweiser Events Center Saturday night. The pair became the first opposing individuals to tally five-point performances against the Killer Bees.
Things continued where they left off from the previous game, which the Bees lost 7-1, with the Eagles lighting the lamp. Kevin Marsh gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead by scoring on the game's first shot on goal, beating Jacque Vezina on the glove side with a shot from the right circle. The Killer Bees were caught behind the eight ball on a couple of penalties, including a bench minor issued to Bees coach Tracy Egeland, and the result was a pair of five-on-three power play goals by Riley Nelson to give the Eagles a 3-0 first intermission lead. Nelson also set a Bees single-game high for an opposing player with two power play goals in a game.
Rio Grande Valley stepped up their offensive pressure in the second period, out-shooting the Eagles 12-8 in the period, but it was the Eagles getting the scoring results. Former NHL'er Greg Pankewicz fired a shot into the top shelf from the top of the right circle 6:28 into the period and Brad Williamson added the Eagles third power play goal 9:09 later to take a 5-0 lead through two periods.
The game did not get any prettier for the Bees in the fight-festive third period. Pankewicz completed his five-point performance with a goal 7:39 into the period. Penalties held up play the rest of the way, as the two teams locked up for six scuffles in the final nine minutes.
ROSTER CHANGES
The Bees are without Bob Rangus, who continues on the 45-Day IR, and Darren Partch, who is on the team suspended list. The Eagles are listed with Kevin McDonald on the 45-Day IR.
