Hartford Colonials News Release
EAST HARTFORD, CT - May 24, 2011 - The Hartford Colonials signed fullback Asaph Schwapp to a contract for the 2011 United Football League season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Schwapp, a Hartford native, returns for his second season with the Colonials. He started four games in 2010 before being placed on the Reserve/Injured list Oct. 18 with knee injury.
Schwapp (6-0, 252) spent the 2009 preseason with the Dallas Cowboys, who signed him as a free agent following the NFL Draft. He was cut at the end of training camp.
"It was a great experience to finally be able to put pads on last year after not playing for a year," said Schwapp, an eighth-round pick by Hartford in the 2010 UFL Draft. "It was a very good feeling to be able to play in my hometown. It was cut short because of my injury, but I think everything happens for a reason. I'm just about 100 percent now and stronger than ever."
In his first season with the Colonials, Schwapp was used primarily as a blocker and in pass protection. He had a similar role in college at Notre Dame, carrying 44 times for 98 yards in 39 games with the Fighting Irish. He also had eight receptions for 62 yards.
Schwapp played at Weaver High School in Hartford and was named 2004 Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut.
The Colonials have 49 players under contract for 2011. UFL teams are allowed to have maximum 70 players on their roster going into training camp.
