Cody Wydo Wins ECHL Rookie of the Month
April 4, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce that Cody Wydo has been selected as the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for March.
Wydo, 25, has had a tremendous first season with the Nailers, as he ranks second on the team with 22 goals and third on the squad with 49 points, while appearing in 57 of the club's 70 games. After picking up one point each in October and November, Cody has seen his totals progress in each successive month, as he recorded six in December, 11 in January, 13 in February, and the team-best 18 in March. He is currently tied for eighth among ECHL rookies in points, while his goal total is fourth best among first year players in the league.
The month of March got off to a phenomenal start for Wydo, as he netted his first career hat trick in a 7-4 win against the Reading Royals. He made the most of his chances that night, as the three goals were scored on four shots. Cody added two assists in another victory over the Royals the following night, helping him secure ECHL Player of the Week honors. The Nailers returned home for their next four games, and the change of scenery didn't make much of a difference for the Southgate, Michigan native, who collected three goals, three assists, and six points while the team went 3-0-1. When all was said and done, Wydo appeared in 13 games during the month, notching eight goals, ten assists, 18 points, a +11 rating, one power play goal, one shorthanded goal, and two game winning goals.
Cody Wydo becomes the fifth Nailer to take home CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month honors, joining Sean Collins, Nick Petersen, Chris Barton, and Mike Condon (two-time winner).
He and the Nailers will begin the final week of the regular season on Friday night at 7:35 against the Reading Royals on Main Street Bank Fan Appreciation Night. One lucky fan will get the chance to shoot to win a car from Whiteside, plus it's a Flat Screen Friday Presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, a Frosty Friday, and Blades for Grades. The Nailers also invite their fans to attend the Team Awards and Playoff Rally at Undo's in Elm Grove on Wednesday at 7:00.
