Cleveland Gladiators News Release

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Gladiators dominated on all three phases of the ball en route to an 82-21 victory over the San Jose SaberCats in front of 5,619 at Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday night. The victory improved Cleveland to 8-6 overall this season, while the loss dropped San Jose to 5-9.

The Gladiators 82 points scored was a franchise-high for points in a game, surpassing the 76 they scored in a win over Iowa last season (6.19). The number also is an Arena Football League season-high, besting the 81 put up by Tulsa (6.11) and Utah (6.18). Their 61-point margin of victory is the second-highest in AFL history, narrowly missing the 62 point win that Albany had over Texas on July 27, 1996.

Quarterback Kurt Rocco was nearly perfect in relief for starter Andrico Hines, who left the game with a knee injury. Kurt was 18-of-20 for 235 yards and seven touchdown passes on the night. In his return after missing the past four games with a shoulder injury, National Guard MVP Troy Bergeron caught 10 passes for 136 yards and five receiving scores. Wide receiver Robert Redd also nabbed three receiving touchdowns in the game.

The Gladiator defense was rock-solid, forcing an AFL season-high and franchise record nine turnovers (five fumbles, four interceptions) in the contest. Riddell Defensive Player of the Game Levy Brown had 15.5 total tackles as well as a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter that ignited a 20-point outburst in the final 20 seconds of the first half by Cleveland.

Defensive back Demarcus Robinson had two picks to go along with 6.5 total tackles, while fellow DB Joe Phinisee added an interception of his own. With their scoreless defensive first quarter, the Gladiators maintain their grip on the best defensive quarter of any team in the Arena Football League this year. Cleveland has only allowed 110 points in the opening period of their 14 games played this season combined.

Cleveland went on a 41-0 scoring run that lasted 13:24 and spanned over the second and third quarters. The Gladiators now have a turnover margin of +15, which is third-best in the AFL so far this season. Their eighth victory bests their 2010 win total (10) and is one-shy of tying the franchise record for wins in a season. The Gladiators went 9-7 and made it all the way to the conference championship game in their inaugural run in 2008.
