Cleveland looking to steam into the New Year

CLEVELAND, OHIO - - The Cleveland Force will hit the road for the final time in 2004 when it heads to the Show Me State to take on the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Central Division St. Louis Steamers on Friday, December 17 at the Savvis Center. The Force game on Saturday, December 18 in San Diego was postponed by the MISL Management Committee on Wednesday.

The game can be heard live on WHK 1420 AM or WHKW 1440 AM in Warren/Youngstown or live worldwide on the Internet at www.thesportsking.com. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:35 p.m.

Cleveland comes into the contest with a record of 4-5 overall, 2-2 versus Central Division opponents, 1-0 in the season series and 2-2 on the road. The Force defeated the Philadelphia KiXX by a final score off 6-5 last Saturday. Cleveland is currently in second place in the Eastern Division 1.0 games behind Philadelphia and 1.0 game ahead of the Baltimore Blast in third place.

The Steamers enter the game with a record of 7-4 overall, 2-2 versus Eastern Division opponents and 4-3 at home. St. Louis is currently in second place in the Central Division 1.0 game behind the Milwaukee Wave and 1.5 games ahead of the expansion Chicago Storm.

The game between the Force and Steamers will mark the second of four meetings on the season as well as the final meeting in St. Louis. The contest will mark the 78th meeting between the two squads with the Force holding a 41-36 advantage. In the first meeting of the season, the Force posted a 4-2 victory over the Steamers on November 14 at the Savvis Center.

Defender and team captain John Ball who recorded a goal and an assist for a game-high two points led Cleveland. Forward Antonio Sutton scored the game-winning goal while forward Chris Handsor and defender Rene Rivas each added a goal.

Four players with one point led St. Louis apiece. Forward Joe Reiniger, who is now on the injured reserve, and forward and head coach Daryl Doran accounted for the two Steamers goals. Forward and Akron native Mike Apple and defender Randy Soderman notched assists in the game.
