Clearwater Wins Rain-Soaked Opener

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Over 24 hours after the start of the series opener, the Clearwater Threshers earned a 1-0 victory in a five-inning, rain-soacked contest against the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Spectrum Field.

Game two was postponed, and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

The opener began on Monday, but was suspended due to rain with the teams scoreless after two and a half innings.

Play resumed on Tuesday, and the Threshers grabbed the game's only run before weather again forced a delay. The contest was called after five innings, giving Clearwater the 1-0 win.

The Threshers (35-29) have increased their lead in the FSL North to 1.5 games on the Daytona Tortugas and two games on the Tampa Yankees, with just six remaining in the first half. Both Daytona and Tampa sat idle after their games were postponed.

After play picked up in the bottom of the third, Emmanuel Marrero drew a leadoff walk against reliever Joe Navilhon (0-1). Herlis Rodriguez sacrificed Marrero down to second, and a wild pitch advanced him to third.

Navilhon managed to get Mark Laird to go down swinging for the second out, but Damek Tomscha delivered a double down the first base line to plate Marrero with the game's only run.

Cole Irvin started, but did not factor in the decision after the game was suspended on Monday. irvin hurled three innings of one-hit ball on only 29 pitches (20 strikes).

Blake Quinn (3-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief. He worked around a hit and three walks, but held Lakeland off the board.

The Threshers and Flying Tigers will play a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 10:30 a.m. on Education Day. Alberto Tirado (4-3) is expected to take the hill in game one against Sandy Baez (1-6), with Jacob Waguespack (3-2) and Kyle Funkhouser (0-1) the scheduled starters in game two.
