Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Clearwater, FL) - Despite home runs from Cory Dunlap and Jeremy Todd, the Vero Beach Dodgers lost a 5-4 decision to the Clearwater Threshers Sunday afternoon at Brighthouse Networks Field. Starter Andy Baldwin went seven innings for the Threshers to improve his record to 2-5 and helped Clearwater split the 4-game series. The Dodgers return home Monday for BellSouth Beach Night at 7:00 PM against Brevard County. The Threshers drew first blood when Brian Burgamy led off the first inning with a home run off Alberto Bastardo. Burgamy finished 2-4 and went 7-12 in the series. Clearwater would load the bases in the first, but Bastardo pitched out of trouble to keep it close. Vero Beach would reward him in the second. Dunlap led off with his fourth home run of the year to tie the score. One out later Cole Bruce doubled and came around on a Jeremy Todd single. Baldwin settled down after that, allowing only two more hits and striking out 10 in seven innings. The Threshers turned the corner in the fourth. With two outs, Marc Tugwell (who entered the game 1-22) drew a walk from Bastardo. Brian Sellier then blooped a ball down the left field line that was dropped by Carlos Santana, but ruled a fair ball. Vero manager Luis Salazar was ejected arguing the play, then P.J. Antoniato singled in both basrunners to put Clearwater ahead 3-2. The inning continued when Burgamy reached on an infield single that deflected off the glove of Bastardo. Albenis Castillo came on in relief and was greeted by a run-scoring single from Peeter Ramos. Brandon Florence followed with a tapper back to the mound and Castillo elected to throw home rather than to first. The baserunner was called safe and the Threshers led 5-2. In the eighth, Blake DeWitt singled for the Dodgers and Dunlap walked. Santana doubled in DeWitt to make it 5-3. Todd led off the ninth with his second home run of the season to pull within the final score, 5-4. It was the 17th one-run loss of the year for Vero Beach.
