Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER (May 28, 2013) -The Clearwater Threshers stymied the Brevard County Manatees 3-0 Tuesday night in front of a raucous crowd of 2,773 at Bright House Field.
The Threshers (25-25) got a terrific performance from rehabbing right-hander Carlos Zambrano, who joined Clearwater as he climbs back to the big leagues for the Philadelphia Phillies. Zambrano held the Manatees (27-23) scoreless over 4.1 excellent innings before giving way at his pitch limit, thus becoming ineligible for the win. Nonetheless, the Clearwater club played up to the level of the three-time National League All-Star, and allowed just five hits to visiting Brevard County.
Clearwater opened the scoring in the bottom of the second against Brevard County starter Brent Suter (3-3). First baseman Chris Serritella cracked a ground-rule double to right with one out, and came in on a single by shortstop Jose Mojica to put Clearwater ahead with an early 1-0 lead.
The Threshers tacked on a pair more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, as center fielder Kyrell Hudson singled and second baseman Jonathan Roof drew a walk with one out to put runners on first and second. Left fielder Aaron Altherr drilled a double into the left field gap, plating both runners and giving Clearwater the final 3-0 lead.
Zambrano dealt 4.1 scoreless innings with three hits and two walks allowed against two strikeouts. Severino Gonzalez (1-0) threw 3.2 gorgeous innings, with only one walk allowed and five strikeouts recorded. Luis Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth inning, with two strikeouts and two hits surrendered for his seventh save.
Suter took the loss, with three runs coughed up on eight hits and a walk in six innings against one strikeout. Chad Pierce walked three but allowed no hits or runs in two innings of relief, fanning two.
Clearwater will look for another win Wednesday afternoon, with righty Perci Garner (4-0) getting the ball for the Threshers against Manatees southpaw Jed Bradley (3-2).
