Clams Battered by Morehead City

June 25, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Edenton Steamers dropped Sunday night's game 19-4 to the Morehead City Marlins at Historic Hicks Field.

The game was made up starting in the bottom of the second inning after the contest on June 20 was postponed due to rain. The Clams and Marlins were scheduled to play two on Sunday, but storms stopped the second game once more in the home half of the second with a 1-0 Steamers lead.

This loss, a stinger, snaps the Clams' three-game win streak, falling to 8-11. The Marlins continue to remain the hottest team in the Coastal Plain League, improving to 16-3 to clinch the East division for the first half. This punches Morehead City a ticket to the 2018 playoffs already.

Edenton's pitchers walked 14 batters and surrendered 14 more hits. Casey Queener got the loss and is now 0-4 after handing out seven earned runs in 4.2 innings. Ashton Raines tossed 6.2 strong innings of just one-run ball with three strikeouts.

On the offensive end, six Morehead City players logged multi-walk games. Hunter Shepherd exploded for a season-high five runs batted in, including a home run, a triple and three runs scored.

Luke Shadid added another round-tripper and a double, adding two more RBI. Brendan Dougherty went 2-for-3 with three RBI, three runs and two walks.

For Edenton, Zane Harris extended his hitting streak to seven games and stole his first base of the season. Tyler Jones hit well, smacking two hits and worked a walk from the eighth spot in the order.

Arthur Sells blasted his second home run of the season in the home half of the eighth. Rich Ciufo contributed with another RBI and Anthony Jefferson scored one run with one hit and a base on balls.

The Steamers return to play on Tuesday night at home against the Wilson Tobs. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
