Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers and Sigora Solar, a local solar and energy efficiency company, are proud to announce a partnership to bring solar power to City Stadium, as well as a club-wide Affinity Program.
The installation of solar panels at City Stadium will modernize the energy efficiency of the nearly century-old stadium, while reducing the facility's carbon footprint, lowering operating costs and leading by example. In addition to the traditional solar array, a Solar Flower will be installed on the main concourse at City Stadium. The Solar Flower will not only provide shade and a cell phone recharging station but will also serve as a visual tool for fans to consider a personal move to renewable energy.
"We are excited about teaming up with the Richmond Kickers," commented Sean Barkley, Regional Director of Commercial Sales for Sigora Solar. "I grew up playing soccer with the youth organization, a staple of the community. Now we are working together and this is part of what makes Richmond such a great city."
Kickers fans are encouraged to sign up for a free home solar evaluation from one of Sigora Solar's trained solar analysts when the three-month Affinity Program kicks off in August. Every home that goes solar will raise $1,000 towards the revitalization of City Stadium and will also turn the lights on for a home in Haiti on Sigora Haiti's micro grid.
In December 2016, the Richmond Kickers were unanimously approved for a 40-year lease for City Stadium. The terms of the agreement will allow the Kickers to make approximately $20 million in upgrades in three phases, over the life of the lease, to revitalize City Stadium for the city, surrounding neighborhood, fans and entire soccer community. The longest continuously operating professional soccer club in the country, the Richmond Kickers have called City Stadium home for 24 years.
