Cincinnati Kings News Release
CINCINNATI--The Cincinnati Kings used a stifling defense and second half offensive attack to shut out Long Island, 2-0, Friday night in United Soccer Leagues action at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The Kings' offense ran roughshod over the Rough Riders throughout the game, with 21 total shots on goal to Long Island's five, but didn't score until the 77th minute of the second half, when Travis Sobers made a nice move in front of the goal to get the ball to George Kithas, who rifled a shot through the defense to the back of the net from 10 yards out. The Kings' second goal came three minutes later from Moussa Dagnogo, with the assist from Jack Cummings. "We lacked intensity in the first half, but still were able to come out of there tied," said Head Coach Jon Pickup. "In the second half I asked for more intensity and the team performed." Matt Gibson, back in goal for the first time since he suffered a broken bone in his hand in the fourth game of the season May 7, played the full 90 minutes for the shutout, with two saves. With the win, the Kings improve to 6-5-5 in the USL Second Division, with four games left. The Kings are in fifth place, with the top four in the division advancing to the playoffs. "We told the team that from now on, we can't worry about what the other teams above us do, but we can only look out for our own results," said Pickup. With a rare Tuesday game coming up at Pittsburgh this week, the Kings have a shorter turnaround than usual. "But it's easier when you win," said Pickup. The Kings play three straight on the road, Tuesday at Pittsburgh, next Saturday at New Hampshire and August 6 at Harrisburg. The Kings' final home game is Saturday, August 13 at 7:30 p.m. against the Northern Virginia Royals.
