On Monday, the New England Collegiate Baseball League announced that Ocean State Waves catcher Chuckie Robinson (Southern Mississippi) was selected as the NECBL Player of the Week for the week ending on July 5, 2015.
Robinson went on a tear at the plate last week, helping the Waves win four straight games, as well as nine of their last ten. In four games, Robinson posted a .643 average (9-14) with four home runs and 9 RBI. Robinson also contributed a 1.643 on base plus slugging percentage (OPS), leading the NECBL over the course of the week.
The biggest factor towards Robinson's success last week was his unmatchable power. Robinson crushed four home runs against three NECBL Southern Division opponents, bringing his season total to six. Robinson started his power surge with a solo home run against the Plymouth Pilgrims on June 29; he would also win the game for the Waves with an RBI double in the ninth. Robinson also blasted two home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh, to propel the Waves to an 8-0 victory over the Mystic Schooners on Friday. Robinson rounded out his surge with a pinch-hit, solo home run to give the Waves a 5-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners on Saturday.
In 2015, Robinson has been a major piece of the Ocean State Waves offense. In 17 games, the junior from Southern Mississippi has hit .317 with six home runs and 14 RBI. Robinson currently leads the Waves in on base percentage (.414) and slugging percentage (.683), demonstrating his ability to reach base consistently and produce runs for the Waves.
Robinson becomes the third Wave in franchise history to be recognized as the NECBL Player of the Week. In 2014, Robby Rinn and Ethan Ferreira were both selected as Players of the Week, while in 2015, Tim Lynch and AJ Ramirez were both Honorable Mentions for the award.
