Keene Swamp Bats News Release

SANFORD - The Keene Swamp Bats are still the only team that have beat the Sanford Mainers in Goodall Park this season. The first time was 3-1 on June 17th.

On Sunday, Keene third baseman Garrett Christman (junior, Butler) hit an RBI-single to right field with two on and two outs in the top of the 9th. With Christman rounding 1st base, Sanford centerfielder Zach Jankarski (junior, Maryland) threw home in attempt to cut down Keene's Jamal Wade (junior, Maryland).

That throw intended for home went errant, allowing two runs to score and allowing the Swamp Bats to come away with a 2-1 win against the Mainers in front of 349 fans in Sanford's home stadium.

The victory advances Keene to 10-5 on the season. The Swamp Bats are now 6-2 in games away from Alumni Field.

Sanford (7-8, 4-2 home) drew first blood in the bottom of the 4th inning when right fielder Jordan Powell (senior, Rhode Island) hit an RBI double into left field to score first baseman Sam Stauble (senior, Southern Maine), making it 1-0 Mainers at the end of four.

The Mainers finished with only three base hits, and left nine base runners stranded.

Sanford didn't have to swing the bat much early. Starting Keene pitcher Rob Carrillo (sophomore, undecided) walked six Mainers in the first five innings of the game.

Carrillo's first start of the season was a no-decision, as he gave up one hit in his five innings of work. He also yielded an earned run while also striking out three.

After Ivon Clough (sophomore, SNHU) tossed a scoreless 6th inning for Keene, left-hander Carmen Giampetruzzi (junior, Boston College) and Keene's DH and right-handed pitcher Wade combined to hold Sanford scoreless in the 7th and 8th innings. The two Swamp Bat relievers' dual effort resulted in a combined three strikeouts, one walk and two hits.

Wade was the winning pitcher for Keene, retiring the last two Mainers in the bottom of the 8th. It was Wade's first victory of the season on the mound, facing four batters, striking out two and allowing only one hit.

In 20 total batters faced in four appearances, Wade has struck out 10 of them.

Giampetruzzi lasted 1.1 innings, tallying a hit, a walk and a strikeout.

The Swamp Bats topped off a solid night of relief pitching when closer Michael LaBeau (senior, Castleton State) climbed the hill in the bottom of the 9th and put the Mainers down in order, striking out two.

It was LaBeau's 6th save of the season, the most among all pitchers in the NECBL.

Sanford's right-handed reliever Troy Miller (sophomore, Michigan), who gave up the go-ahead RBI to Christman, took the loss on the mound for the Mainers. Working in only the 9th inning, Miller surrendered one earned and one unearned run, one hit, one walk along with one strikeout.

The Swamp Bats have a day of rest Monday before hosting the Newport Gulls (7-8) on Tuesday. First pitch from Alumni Field is scheduled for 6:30. The game can be heard on the NECBL Broadcast Network, FM 104.1 and AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
