New York Power News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, May 5, 2003) - New York Power rookie forward Christie Welsh has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending May 4, 2003. The second overall pick in the 2003 WUSA Draft scored two goals to lead the Power to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Charge on May 3 at Villanova Stadium.

Welsh's two goals led New York to its first two-game winning streak since June 2001. In the 40th minute, Welsh made a run at Philadelphia goalkeeper Melissa Moore, hurrying Moore's kick which hit Welsh in the chest and bounced back into the net, tying the game at 3-3. Welsh would score her second goal in the 85th minute, this time tying the score at four apiece. After a scramble in the box, Power midfielder Shannon Boxx's shot deflected off a Charge defender and went directly to Welsh, who calmly tapped it home for the goal. With the two goals, Welsh became only the second New York player besides Tiffeny Milbrett to score more than one goal in a game.

Welsh follows Milbrett in winning the weekly honor, as the 2001 WUSA Most Valuable Player won the award last week. In fact, Welsh is the only other Power player to win the weekly award in the league's three seasons. Milbrett and Welsh have combined for six goals in the last two games.

"With Welsh, the potential is always there," said Milbrett. "I'm excited in what I've seen in her. With her pace and the knack she has for finding the back of the net, being able to serve her will work well for her. She is a more seasoned player."

Welsh captured 51 points in the voting (25 first place, 1 second place) to defeat San Diego's Julie Fleeting (11 points). Nine other WUSA players received votes, ranging from one to six points. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.

MET-Rx is the official protein-based sports supplement of the WUSA. MET-Rx Sports Nutrition. "Goals Set. Goals Met."
