Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- Offensive specialist Chris Jackson of the Los Angeles Avengers has been named the Arena Football League's "Offensive Player of the Week" for his outstanding performance in Sunday's 63-49 victory over the Arizona Rattlers.

He had 10 receptions for 172 yards and six touchdowns versus the Rattlers at America West Arena in Phoenix, as the Avengers improved to 10-4.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Jackson has 110 receptions for 1,589 yards and 45 touchdowns. Each of those statistics represents a new team record and his touchdown reception total is just one shy of the AFL's single-season record, which was set by Mike Horacek of the Iowa Barnstormers in 2000.

Jackson, who has scored 272 points for the Avengers this year, might also threaten the AFL single-season records for touchdowns (51, by both Eddie Brown of the Albany Firebirds in 1996 and Barry Wagner of the Orlando Predators in 1997) and scoring (310 points, by Wagner in 1997).

This is the second time this season that the AFL has honored Jackson with a weekly award. He earned the same mention following a 59-53 overtime victory over the Colorado Crush on Feb. 16, which saw him catch 10 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

This marks the 16th time in the last 28 weeks of competition that an Avenger player has been honored with an AFL weekly or monthly award.

The AFL also named San Jose defensive specialist Clevan Thomas the "Defensive Player of the Week" and Tampa Bay wide receiver/defensive back Lawrence Samuels the "Ironman of the Week."

Thomas had 3.5 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in the SaberCats' 56-55 victory over Grand Rapids. He leads the AFL with 11 interceptions this year.

Samuels scored touchdowns on an 11-yard reception and an interception return in the Storm's 67-64 victory over the Dallas Desperados. He also had three tackles, including a key fourth-down stop at the goal line, and recovered an onside kick in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.

The Avengers play the Colorado Crush (2-12) on Saturday, May 10, at STAPLES Center. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports Net 2.
