Chill makes first trade in history

February 3, 2004 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Colorado Chill News Release

The Colorado Chill completed its first player trade in history, swapping guards with the Birmingham Power of the National Women's Basketball League.

The two NWBL teams played Feb. 2 in Alabama, then proceeded to exchange players. Colorado, in the midst of its inaugural season in the professional league, traded Meggan Yedsena for Candace Baldwin. Baldwin is expected to join the team Wednesday and practice this week in time for the Chill's 1 p.m. home game Saturday against the league-leading Houston Stealth.

"There was a situation for Meggan to play more minutes and have a bigger contribution with Birmingham," Chill general manager Dave King said. "They're looking for a point guard to run their offense, and Meggan can do that."

King said he saw Baldwin at the NWBL national tryouts last fall and was impressed with her, especially her defensive skills. Baldwin is a 2003 graduate of Texas Christian, where she helped the Horned Frogs to a 20-14 record and second-round berth in the NCAA Tournament. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 7.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Baldwin played in all five games for Birmingham, averaging 16.2 minutes a game and contributing 2.2 points and 2.6 assists per game.

Yedsena played in seven games for the Chill, averaging 12.7 minutes and contributing 1.6 points and 1.3 assists per game. The 5-8 veteran guard is a 1994 graduate of Nebraska, where she still holds the school and Big Eight records for career assists. She averaged 9.3 points and 5.8 assists per game for her four-year career.

The Chill (3-4) flew back to Colorado today and takes on the Springfield Spirit (1-4) at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado is 3-0 in home games.
