Chill Battle Early But Fall Late
February 8, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
St. Charles Chill News Release
Moline, Ill. - A pair of first period goals dug an early hole for St. Charles who would battle back twice to close the gap to a single goal but Gabriel Levesque notched a hat trick for the Mallards en-route to a 6-3 win over the Chill at the iWireless Center Saturday night.
Quad City (21-11-8) got the scoring started just over eight minutes into the game with a power play goal from Levesque. Just over a minute later the Mallards stretched their lead to 2-0 on a blast from the point by Mike Duffy. St. Charles (10-30-5) did not wait long to respond. Rookie Travis Ouellette scored his first for the Chill with Nicklas Lindberg picking up the assist along with Mike Kavanagh who was added to the roster prior to the game.
The Mallards would stretch their lead back to two goals in the final three minutes of the opening period but the Chill's Kyle O'Kane added his 19 goal of the season, a power play goal set up by Lindberg and Dan Weiss in the final seconds of the frame to send the teams to the first intermission in a close one at 3-2.
The second period went back and forth with both teams failing to score on a pair of power plays before the Mallards took the momentum in the period in the final minutes and capitalized on the third goal of the night from Levesque to increase the score to 4-2 heading into the third period.
The Mallards built on that momentum in the third period, stretching their lead to 5-2 six minutes in but the Chill would cut into their deficit midway through the period on a goal from defenseman Dan Weiss, his fifth, with the lone assist coming from John Snowden. Quad City would answer less than four minutes later to push their lead back to three goals and the final score of 6-3.
The Chill returns to the Family Arena Sunday, February 9th for Faith and Family Night. Traveling mascot group Fur Circus will join the entertainment and there will be a postgame convocation from former River Otter Charlie Blyth as well as concert from local Christian rock band Broken 4 One.
