Chiefs Lose 4-1 to Indianapolis

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Indianapolis Indians prevailed 4-1 over the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse's season-high losing streak is at nine.

The Indians (56-51) climbed out to an early advantage by scoring three runs in the game's first three innings.

Indianapolis scored a run without registering a hit in the first. Brian Friday and Doug Bernier began the game with a pair of walks. After Friday tagged up and moved to third on Alex Presley's flyout to center, Brandon Moss lifted a sac fly to Boomer Whiting, sending home Friday with the Indians' first run.

The Indians gathered two more runs in the third to increase their lead to three. With one out, Bernier walked for the second time and Presley ripped a single to right. Both base runners moved up on Moss's grounder to first, putting runners on second and third with two outs. On the 12th pitch of the at bat, Indianapolis third baseman Jim Negrych clocked a double to left centerfield, bringing home Bernier and Presley for a 3-0 lead.

Indianapolis had another run-scoring inning in the seventh. Argenis Diaz led off the frame with a walk and was bunted over to second by Indians pitcher Jeremy Powell. In the next at bat, Friday stroked a single to center. Diaz tried to come home on the play but he was gunned down at the plate by Justin Maxwell. Bernier's single later in the inning scored Friday for the Indians' fourth and final run of the night.

Syracuse (54-52) managed seven hits all night. Their only run came on a Seth Bynum RBI single with two outs in the ninth. The Chiefs have now been outscored 66 to 31 during their nine-game losing streak.

Jeremy Powell evened his record to 7-7 with the win. Thursday night marked Powell's longest outing of the season. He threw 115 pitches in 8 2/3 innings of work. Powell surrendered seven hits and one run, reducing his season ERA to 4.79. He walked two and struck out seven.

Syracuse lefty Matt Chico (5-5) was hit with his first loss since June 30that Buffalo. Chico let in three runs on four hits over his six innings of work. He fanned four Indianapolis hitters and walked two.

The Chiefs and Indians will meet again for the series finale Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Jeff Mandel (4-6, 4.78) will throw for Syracuse against Indianapolis righty Brad Lincoln (6-2, 3.16). First pitch will be at 7:00.
