Chiefs Give Back To The Community

June 27, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA (June 26, 2007)- The Johnstown Chiefs made significant charitable contributions to the Laurel Highlands region last year in a continuing effort to give back and assist their hometown.

This upcoming season, the Chiefs will be celebrating their 20th-anniversary, and their commitment to the people of Johnstown is exceeded by the support they get from their great fans. As the only remaining ECHL franchise still in its original city, the Chiefs make it a top priority to give back to those who matter most - the members of the community.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Chiefs collected over 600 pounds of food, which was donated to local residents in need through the Food for Families organization.

In cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps and Cool 101, the Chiefs colleted over 3,300 toys for underprivileged children during the Christmas season as part of its toy toss program. Chief's players also teamed up with The Salvation Army to raise over $600 in one day as bell ringers outside of area stores and shopping malls.

"The charitable work that we do in the community is a top priority for the Johnstown Chiefs. From fans, to players, coaches, and front office staff, everyone is great about volunteering their time and effort." said Chiefs Director of Business Operations, Doug Nelson.

Through a season-long blood drive that the Chiefs held in conjunction with the American Red Cross, they gained an approximate increase of twenty percent in whole blood donations, with 674 units. They also added 77 more units through the Chiefs versus Nailers blood drive challenge.

As part of their "Stick with Reading" program, the Chiefs players, coaches and staff visited over 25 schools in the Greater Johnstown area, and made presentations advocating the importance of reading. With the program, local students were able to meet their favorite Chiefs players while also learning a valuable life skill.

In addition, the Chiefs ventured out to brighten the days of patients with various visits to local hospitals. The players also took time out to support local youth hockey organizations by making regular stops at clinics, camps, and practices.

In the coming months, several community activities and appearances are scheduled, including the Chiefs first annual free admission fan fest on August 25 from 12-3pm! More information on the Chief's upcoming community involvement and how your organization can book the Chiefs free speakers bureau can be found at www.johnstownchiefs.com.
