PEORIA, Ill. - A pair of singles with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed across the winning run and gave the host Peoria Chiefs a 4-3 victory over the Battle Creek Yankees in a Midwest League baseball game Wednesday night at O¹Brien Field. The Chiefs lead the series 2-1, with the final game set for Thursday night.

In the eighth, Peoria got a two-out single, a stolen base and another single to take their only lead of the game.

Battle Creek grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on just one hit ‹ a lead-off single by Alexander Santa. An error and a groundout RBI by Omir Santos helped the Yankees.

Peoria closed to within 2-1 with a run in he second, but the Yankees bounced back with a run in the third for a 3-1 lead. Santa ripped a lead-off double, took third on a groundout by Joaquin Arias and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jayson Drobiak.

The Chiefs loaded the bases on three straight singles to start the fourth, but managed just one run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Peoria tied it 3-3 with a run in the fifth.

The Yankees got back-to-back one-out singles from Matt Carson and Rudy Guillen in the sixth, but couldn¹t score.

Battle Creek starter Jose Valdez allowed three runs in 5.1 innings. The Chiefs threatened in the sixth, but reliever Thad Markray came in and worked out of a one-out jam.

Willie Vasquez led off the seventh for the Yankees with a double, and advanced to third with one out as Arias reached on an error. But two strikeouts ended the inning. Carson led off the eighth with a single, but was stranded there.

Markray (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Charlie Isaacson finished the eighth after the Chiefs had scored the go-ahead run.
