
Cougars rally late, up end Silver Hawks, 2-1

Geneva, IL - It was John McCurdy's turn to play a hero on Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium. He delivered a clutch two out two run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Cougars to a 2-1 win. McCurdy finished the night 2-for-4, and picked up his first hit with the bases loaded this season.
Jared Burton (2-0) worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning to earn his second win at Elfstrom Stadium. Jeff Muessig made it 7-for-7 in save opportunities, hurling a perfect ninth inning, striking out Sean Luellwitz to end the game. Josh Kranawetter (0-2) last only 2/3 of an inning, allowing both runs on two hits and two walks.
Both starting pitchers were dominant, but South Bend starter, Dustin Nippert, was a shade better than Drew Dickinson. Nippert worked seven scoreless innings, on two hits, one walk, and struck out five. Dickinson also worked seven innings, surrendering a run on three hits and fanning three.
The game was scoreless through five innings, before South Bend scored a run in the sixth. Neb Brown led off the inning with an infield single, Jarred Ball followed with a single to right, putting runners at first and third.. After Dickinson fanned Jerry Gill, Jeff Stanek, a native of Lockport, Illinois, delivered a sacrifice fly.
Before tonight's game, the Cougars in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics announced that outfielder Marcus McBeth has been assigned from Extended Spring Training. To make room for McBeth, pitcher Chris Mowday has been sent to Extended Spring Training.
The Cougars and Silver Hawks conclude their series tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium - game time is 6:00 PM. Joe Blanton RHP (2-3, 3..06) makes his seventh start of the season for the Cougars; Sam Smith RHP (2-1, 2.87) gets the starting nod for South Bend.
