Chiefs Beat Bandits 8-4 Friday

PEORIA, IL- Mason Katz hit a three-run homerun and Matthew Young crushed a grand slam to help Jimmy Reed to his first win of the season as the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 8-4 on Friday night. The Chiefs are now on a four-game winning streak and have a 12-7 record.

Quad Cities jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Brian Holberton two-out double to score both runs. Reed settled down from there, going the next four innings without allowing a run.

His offense got him a lead in the second, scoring four times. It started with a Ronald Castillo walk and with one out Matthew Young reached on a fielder's choice and throwing error to put runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Mason Katz drilled a three-run homer to left and the Chiefs had the lead. Michael Schulze walked and stole second, and CJ McElroy Jr. singled him in for the inning's fourth run.

The Chiefs put the game away in the fifth. With one out, Carson Kelly, Castillo, and Kenny Peoples-Walls each singled to load the bases and Young deposited the first pitch over the wall in left for a grand slam and 8-2 lead.

The River Bandits scored single runs in both the sixth and seventh against Chris Perry on a James Ramsay single and Conrad Gregor double to cut the lead to 8-4, but they didn't get any closer.

Reed (1-1) went the first five innings, allowing just the two first inning runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Perry worked the next two innings, giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kevin Herget pitched the final two perfect innings, striking out three.
