Chiefs Announce 2009-10 Schedule
June 24, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch, announced today its schedule for the 2009-10 ECHL season. The Chiefs' slate for their 22nd ECHL season, which is chocked full of exciting match-ups, gets under way with the home opener on Saturday, October 17.
"I'm pleased with the schedule, which I view as vastly improved when compared to last season, from a competitive and a marketing standpoint. The Chiefs organization is especially excited about renewing and improving our Veteran's Day celebration as well as hosting games on traditional Johnstown dates such as Thanksgiving weekend and New Year's Eve," said Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin.
The Chiefs' home, and season, opener is slated for Saturday, October 17 at 7:05 p.m. ET against the defending North Division champion Cincinnati Cyclones. Johnstown will be seeking some measure of revenge that night against the team that ended its playoff run in 2008, and knocked it out of playoff contention on the last day of the regular season in 2009. Four days later Johnstown will hit the road to take on the Trenton Devils, of the newly-aligned South Division, for their first road game of the season.
The Chiefs only saw three South Division teams last season (Florida, South Carolina, and Mississippi) but will become very familiar with their southern foes this time around. This seasons' slate features an early-season southern road trip, and five of the six South Division teams making a trip to the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial. A weekend swing from November 20-22 will take Johnstown to South Carolina once and Charlotte twice. Trips to Trenton and Reading (also moved to the South Division) are mixed in throughout the season, while Florida and Gwinnett are the only southern teams the Chiefs won't visit.

Holidays are a call to celebration and residents of Chiefstown will be happy to note that there will be much celebrating at the War Memorial during the holidays during the season. Back for 2009-10 is the traditional New Year's Eve contest with Elmira taking part in the game for the second time in three seasons. Making a triumphant return this season is the Chiefs' Veterans' Day Game on November 11 against Reading. Sunday, February 14 will provide two times the reason to celebrate. Couples can have an exciting and romantic time as the Chiefs take on Cincinnati on Valentine's Day, as well as the attendance of many youth that will be in town for the second annual Chiefs Presidents' Day Tournament. The Chiefs will also be "home for the holidays" with home dates on either side of Thanksgiving (November 25, 27, and 28), as well as on Boxing Day, Saturday December 26.
"The release of the schedule is the first real sign that the 2009-10 season is within reach and we can begin to look forward to October 17th. It's significant because our great fans can now book 36 nights and we can finalize our promotional calendar, which will translate into more affordable family entertainment and exciting game day events," added Bredin
