Chico Outlaws News Release

(Chico, CA. January 27, 2011) The Chico Outlaws of the new North American League announced today that Team President Mike Marshall has been named as the team's field manager for the 2011 season. The ex-Dodger All-Star and 1988 World Series hero is believed to be the first professional baseball field manager to also be Team President since Connie Mack retired as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics after the 1950 season.

Marshall, 51, played 11 seasons in the major leagues primarily as an outfielder and won World Series Championships with the 1981 and 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers. Drafted out of high school in the 6th round by L.A. he rocketed through the farm system, winning the Triple Crown in AAA and debuting in the big leagues in 1981. He was named to the 1984 National League All-Star team, was in the Top 15 in MVP voting in 1985 and averaged over 20 home runs a year for the Dodgers in a six year period in the pre-steroid era and is still one of the Top 500 Home Run hitters of all-time. After his playing career ended he turned to managing and also front office roles for a number of minor league teams and leagues. As a manager he has been the field boss in Albany, New York; El Paso, Texas; and Yuma, Arizona. He has only had one losing season and has a lifetime managing record of 284-237 for a winning percentage of .545 and has had his team in the playoffs three times and has two Arizona Winter League championship titles. Coming to the Chico Outlaws last year as team president, he was the architect of rebuilding the Chico roster that resulted in a rise from 2010 cellar dweller to 2011 League Champions.

"We are excited that Mike has chosen to accept this opportunity as he is a proven winner as a player, manager, and front office executive," said Kevin Outcalt, CEO of Diamond Sports & Entertainment who own the Chico Outlaws. "What Mike has done with both the team and the franchise has been very impressive and I believe moving him into this dual role will provide the benefits of even more of his skills to the Outlaws. I am confident that he will be successful in defending the league championship and look forward to another winning season in Chico."
