CHICAGO, May 20, 2008 - The Chicago Sky released six-year WNBA veteran Kayte Christensen today. The 6'2" forward was signed by the Sky as a restricted free agent on March 8, 2007. She started 7 of 23 games played in 2007, averaging 1.9 rebounds and 2.1 points per game. She missed four consecutive games in 2007 due to a lower back injury. She played in two of the Sky's 2008 pre-season games, but missed the season opener in Seattle because of the back injury.
Christensen was a UC-Santa Barbara standout, averaging14.5 points and 9.1 rebounds in 32 games her senior year and earning Big West Conference Player of the Year honors. She holds the UC-Santa Barbara school record for career field goal percentage at .549. She was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the third round (40th overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft. She shot .505 from the field her rookie season, second highest among all rookies.
The Sky is one of seven independently-owned teams in the WNBA, the world's longest-running women's professional sports league. The Sky celebrated its inaugural season in 2006, and finished a successful sophomore season with a 14-20 record and guard Armintie Price named WNBA Rookie of the Year. The team selected 6'6" LSU star Sylvia Fowles with the number two pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft. The Sky will play their season home opener is on May 22 against the Sacramento Monarchs.
