Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Fire FC announced today that the Club has acquired 19-year-old defender Carlos Terán via transfer from Colombian first division club Envigado FC. Terán will be added to the Fire's roster pending a medical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa. He is under contract with the Fire through the 2024 season with a Club option for the 2025 season.
Additionally, the Club announced today that it has placed goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm and midfielder Luka StojanoviÃâ¡ on the season ending injury list, opening two roster spots and an international roster slot. Terán will occupy the international slot previously held by StojanoviÃâ¡.
"Carlos is a promising young player who can play as a center back and as a right full-back," said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Georg Heitz. "Colombia has produced many talented players and we are excited to sign one of its rising youth national team defenders. We are looking forward to working with him as we believe that he will fit in very well with our current group of players."
Since making his professional debut as an 18-year-old on Jan. 30, 2019, Terán has made 17 appearances (16 starts) in Colombia's top-flight from 2019-20. Additionally, the defender has made three appearances (three starts) in the Copa Colombia tournament during that stretch.
Internationally, Terán has featured for Colombia's U-20 and U-23 sides in major tournaments. In 2019, Terán was named to Colombia's final roster for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. The defender made an appearance in the group stage, featuring in Colombia's 2-0 win over Poland on May 23, 2019.
Additionally, Terán has made two appearances for Colombia's U-23 team in 2020, recording starts in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament. The defender started against Argentina's U-23 side on Jan. 19 and played the full 90 minutes against Uruguay's U-23 team on Feb. 10.
