Three first-half goals doomed the Chicago Fire as the MLS side was trounced by Mexican Primera Division team Monarcas Morelia 5-1 in the first SuperLiga 2010 match at TOYOTA PARK. Morelia midfielder Elias Hernandez tallied a fourth-minute goal and added three assists as Morelia stormed out to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Fire (0-1-0, 0 points) allowed five goals in one match for the first time since March 17, 2004, when Cornell Glenn served up a first-half hat trick and San Juan Jabloteh beat the Fire 5-2 on the road in CONCACAF Champions Cup action.
In the fourth minute, Hernandez pounced on a poor clearance by the Fire defense and powered a ball past Fire goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to give the visiting side an early advantage.
Morelia added to their lead in the 34th minute as a Hugo Droguett cross slipped through to the six-yard box, past a diving Andrew Dykstra and forward Luis Gabriel Rey tumbled the ball across the line to give Morelia a 2-0 lead. Just six minutes later Mexican international Miguel Sabah fired home a direct shot to make it three goals on 40 minutes.
Coming off his spirited MLS debut, Steven Kinney briefly gave the Fire reprieve. Mapp chipped a lofted cross over the Morelia defense and the Fire rookie slotted a shot past Morelia âkeeper Yair Urbina to the far post. Before Kinney's goal had been announced to the crowd, the Mexican club padded their lead back to three as Rafael Marquez Lugo lashed a shot from outside of the box that found the upper left corner of the net. Jaime Lozano capped off the Morelia scoring spree with a 70th minute goal.
The Fire continue group play when they take on MLS Eastern Conference rivals the New England Revolution at TOYOTA PARK at 6:00 PM CT (TeleFutura). Mexican clubs Monarcas Morelia and Pumas UNAM will round out the SuperLiga Group B doubleheader at TOYOTA PARK when they take the pitch at 8:30 PM CT (TeleFutura).
