Chicago Fire FC News Release

The Chicago Fire (9-9-16, 43 points) closed out the 2011 season winners of seven of their final 10 matches before narrowly missing the playoffs for only the third time in the club's 14-year history. The Men in Red overcame a slow start, but remained in the hunt for a MLS Cup Playoff spot until the final week of the season, eventually finishing with nine victories, a U.S. Open Cup runners-up medal and a MLS-record 16 draws.

The Fire's resolve was most evident in the final two matches of the season. Trailing 1-0 to D.C. United at RFK Stadium in the 90th minute, the Men in Red tallied two stoppage time goals to become the first team since OT was eliminated in 2004 to rally from a goal deficit to win a match in stoppage time. Against Columbus on the weekend, Diego Chaves once again played hero, knocking home a Dominic Oduro rebound to give the Fire a 3-2 victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,237 at TOYOTA PARK.

Fire interim head coach Frank Klopas finished with a 8-5-10 record since assuming the head coaching role from Carlos de los Cobos May 31.
