Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, Ill. (May 25, 2013) - The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Saturday the team has acquired midfielder Mike Magee from the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for the right of first refusal to U.S. international Robbie Rogers and other considerations. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Magee will join the team in Chicago and will train with the Fire for the first time on Monday, May 27. Magee will be available to media following training which begins at 9:00 a.m. CT.
"To add someone of Mike's caliber to the Fire roster is tremendous," said Chicago Fire President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon. "Mike is a proven offensive threat and to have him on our roster is a great opportunity for the Fire. He's a Chicago guy, and we know he's just as excited to come back home as we are to have him join the Club."
Magee joins the Fire in exchange for the right of first refusal to U.S. international Robbie Rogers. Rogers' rights were acquired in a trade with the Columbus Crew on Feb. 4, 2013.
"We initially acquired the rights to Robbie Rogers because we think he is a great player," said Leon. "As he expressed his interest in being home near his family, we're happy to have worked out a deal with the Galaxy that will benefit all parties. We wish Robbie all the best with the Galaxy."
A Chicago, Ill. native, Magee was the fourth overall selection in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the then New York/New Jersey MetroStars after a two-year stay at the U.S. Soccer Residency program in Bradenton, Fla.
Magee made his professional debut and became the youngest player in New York history at the time at 18 years, 222 days on April 12, 2003 vs. the Columbus Crew. Over six seasons with the New York side, Magee made 130 regular season appearances and scored 23 goal and notched 13 assists.
Magee headed west when he was acquired by the Galaxy prior to the start of the 2009 season. In five seasons with the Galaxy, Magee made 105 regular season appearances, tallying 19 goals and 11 assists.
A current two-time defending MLS Cup champion, Magee has reached the MLS Cup final four times and has eight goals and one assist in 20 post-season appearances throughout his career.
A U.S. Youth International, Magee has represented the United States at the U-17, U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels, appearing in the 2001 U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago and the 2003 U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
