Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Riding a six-game point streak, the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Steel (36-12-8-1; 81 pts.) face off against the Youngstown Phantoms (27-22-5-4; 63 pts.) and Team USA (U17) (26-26-4-1; 57 pts.) this weekend.
Starting with a pair of games at Covelli Centre in Ohio, the Steel take on the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 with both games scheduled for 6:05 pm CT starts, the final matchups of an eight-game season series that currently stands deadlocked with both teams earning three wins apiece to this point.
In an offensive showcase at Fox Valley Ice Arena in the club's most recent action, Chicago swept a pair of games against the Green Bay Gamblers, starting with a 5-2 victory on April 8 which secured a First Round playoff bye. The Steel then registered a season high 10 goals in a 10-3 win on April 9.
Steel co-captain Sam Lipkin has scored in six consecutive games with seven markers over that stretch, jumping into a tie for fourth among all USHL skaters this season with 33 total goals over 54 games played. The Lafayette Hill, Penn., native and Quinnipiac University commit was selected in the seventh round (#223 Overall) by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2021 NHL Draft. Lipkin's six-game goal streak is tied for the second-longest streak by any USHL skater during the 2021-2022 season.
Currently in fourth place in the East, the Youngstown Phantoms enter the weekend on the brink of clinching the club's first playoff berth since the 2018-2019 campaign. Youngstown can secure its playoff spot as soon as Friday night with a win and a loss by Team USA (U17).
Team USA (U17) is currently on the outside of the playoff picture with the same amount of points (57) but one fewer regulation or overtime win than the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders who currently hold the final spot.
The U17 club split a two-game road series against the Madison Capitols with an 8-3 loss on April 8 and a 5-3 victory the following night. They host the Muskegon Lumberjacks on April 15 & April 16 before welcoming the Steel to USA Hockey Arena in Michigan for Sunday's regular season series finale.
Team USA (U17) has earned four out of a possible eight points in four games against the Steel this season, riding a two-game win streak against Chicago into the regular season series finale on Sunday.
Will Smith (14G) and Will Vote (12G) pace Team USA (U17) in goals but Smith has been held off the scoreboard in five games against the Steel this season while Vote has picked up two markers in four matchups with Chicago.
The Steel will return home for the team's final regular season home game on Friday, April 22 on Fan Appreciation Night presented by Smithfield with a team photo giveaway plus great prizes. The Clark Cup Playoffs begin April 25.
