Checkers to Host Throwback Weekend Starting Saturday
December 3, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers will honor their 1995-96 Riley Cup championship team by wearing specialty throwback jerseys from that season and welcoming former players and builders alike for their series against the Ontario Reign on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m.
As part of Throwback Weekend, presented by Husqvarna, jerseys worn by the current group of Checkers will be up for auction immediately following Saturday's game, with proceeds benefiting the Checkers Charitable Foundation. A photo of the jerseys, which are identical to what the 1995-96 team wore, is attached to this release.
Members of the 1995-96 team, including Phil Berger, Kimbi Daniels, Eric Flinton, Jason Kelly, Scott Kirton, Dennis Maxwell, Scott Meehan, Darryl Noren, Charlie Paquette, Kurt Seher, Nick Vitucci, Shawn Wheeler and coach John Marks, will be present to meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday. The signing will take place from 6-6:30 p.m. behind sections 115-16, with fans encouraged to arrive early to avoid missing the opportunity. As with all Friday and Saturday games, coliseum doors will open 90 minutes prior to puck drop (5:30 in this case).
To help mark their return to Bojangles' Coliseum, where the Checkers played at various points from 1956-2005 before returning this season, the team will unveil a permanent banner in the rafters each night. Saturday's will honor the 1995-96 championship team, while Sunday's will honor former owners Felix Sabates and Carl Scheer and former coach and southern hockey pioneer Pat Kelly.
Other promotions during the weekend include free Husqvarna hats to the first 5,000 fans on each night, a toy drive presented by Country Boy Landscaping in which anyone who donates an unwrapped toy at either game will receive a free ticket to the game on Friday, Jan. 22, and a special family four pack on Sunday that offers savings of $45.50 (40 percent) off four tickets.
