Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers today announced seven additions to their roster for training camp that begins this Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.

Six players - forwards Phil Di Giuseppe, Brody Sutter, Sergey Tolchinsky and Brendan Woods, defenseman Trevor Carrick and goaltender Drew MacIntyre - arrive from NHL training camp with the Carolina Hurricanes, while forward Jared Staal joins on a tryout basis. The assignments of Sutter and MacIntyre are pending clearance of NHL waivers at noon Tuesday.

All seven players have played for the Checkers in the past, with all but Tolchinsky, who is set to begin his first full professional campaign, spending the majority of last season with the club. Staal, a free agent invite and the younger brother of Hurricanes forwards Eric and Jordan Staal, has played 255 games with Charlotte dating back to its inaugural AHL season in 2010-11, scoring 34 points (17g, 17a) to go along with 97 penalty minutes. Staal is one of five players (Zach Boychuk, Michal Jordan, Rasmus Rissanen, Chris Terry) to play at least one game for the Checkers in all five of their AHL seasons.
