Chattanooga Wins Southern League Community Service Award

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Today, the Southern League announced that the Chattanooga Lookouts have been awarded the Southern League Community Service Award. The Community Service Award was established to recognize the efforts of the club which has demonstrated an outstanding and dedicated commitment to charitable service, support and leadership in their local community. Chattanooga is also the league's nomination for the Minor League Baseball John Henry Moss Community Service Award.
Throughout the entire 2014 season the Lookouts have shined a spotlight on the Chattanooga community with several of their local initiatives, including their Most Improved Student and RBI Programs as well as hosting the Chattanooga Down Syndrome Society's Buddy Walk and the annual Tennessee Valley Heart Walk at AT&T Field.
"Our Most Improved Student program is one of the neatest things we do here at the ballpark," said Lookouts' President and General Manager Rich Mozingo. "It gives any student in the Chattanooga area the chance to be rewarded and recognized on the field for all the hard work they do in the classroom."
While hosting charitable events and inviting fan participation for community causes all season long, as hosts of the 2014 Southern League All-Star Game, Chattanooga was able to escalate efforts over the three-day festivities, including taking time out of the schedule for the All-Stars to visit with ill children in a local hospital.
"My favorite part of the All-Star Festivities, far and away, was when these players went to TC Thompson's [Children's Hospital], Siskin's Children Institute and we held a clinic for the kids in the RBI Program." Mozingo said. "On their off day not one single guy batted an eye and every single player was happy to be giving back to the community." The All-Star week also gave the team the chance to continue their relationship with the RBI Program. Along with hosting a home run derby and clinic for the participants of the program the team also donated 100% of the proceeds of the 2014 All Star Game Luncheon to the initiative.
On Friday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. EST, the team will match up against Huntsville in the second game of the North Division Playoffs. RHP Steve Smith will face-off against RHP Austin Ross. The team is set to return home for at least one game on Saturday, September 6 at 7:15 p.m EST.
