Fort Worth Cats News Release
FORT WORTH - -In what was already sure to be a great atmosphere for game one of the United League championship series, country music legend Charley Pride will be on hand at historic LaGrave Field to sing the national anthem and coach first base.
The Fort Worth Cats are hosting games one and two of the United League championship series beginning Friday night against the Edinburg Roadrunners. The best-of-five series winner will be crowned United League champion.
Charley Pride has been active in the country music scene since the late 1960s. The Mississippi native's greatest musical success came in the early-to-mid 1970s when he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. In total, he has garnered 39 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.
Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. The 74 year old was given a Grammy award, as well as being honored by The Country Music Association as Male Vocalist of the Year two years in a row. He is also only the second African American to have been inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Charley Pride is known to be an avid baseball fan, as he is a recent minority owner of the Texas Rangers. Pride will be the guest first base coach for the Fort Worth Cats throughout game one on Friday night, as well as getting the opportunity to take batting practice with the team pregame.
First pitch for game one Friday night is at 7:05. The Cats will look to keep their postseason winning streak alive after sweeping the San Angelo Colts in the first round. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
