
Charleston Battery starts 2006 US Open Cup quest Wednesday at Blackbaud

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery (USL 1) hosts the Sonoma County Sol (USASA) in the second round of the 2006 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup; the game will be played this Wednesday, June 28 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island with kick off set for 7:30 PM.
Sonoma County advanced to the second round with a home win versus the Ogden Outlaws (PDL) in the first round; the game was decided by penalty-kicks. Charleston was not required to play in the first round of the competition.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.
The Charleston Battery has seen considerable success in the US Open Cup in the past. The Battery has twice reached the semi-final stage of the competition (1999 & 2004); in 2005 Charleston was knocked out of the competition by the Des Moines Menace (PDL).
If the Battery defeats Sonoma County it will host the Portland Timbers (USL 1) in a third round fixture at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday, July 14.

Battery @ Atlanta & Battery vs Thunder
The Battery returns to USL First Division action Friday night in Atlanta with a 7:30 PM game versus the Silverbacks (CNN 1450 AM). Charleston follows the match versus Atlanta with a 7:30 PM game versus the Minnesota Thunder at Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday night. Immediately following the Minnesota game there will be a fireworks display in honor of the July 4 weekend.
