Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Whitecaps defeated the visiting Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 Sunday night, on the strength of a dominant second half display and a nicely worked goal that was finished off by Jay Alberts. The win, in front of a sell-out crowd, moves Vancouver into first place in the USL First Division. Both the Whitecaps Men and Women sit top of the table in their repsective leagues.
After a fairly even first half, the Caps took control out-shooting Puerto Rico 13-0 in the second half! Goalkeeper Tony Caig made two saves on four shots to record his third shutout of the season.
Vancouver's record improves to 5W-2L-7T for 22 point, one point up on second place Rochester Raging Rhinos. Puerto Rico drop to 6-4-2 for 20 points, and sit in third spot.
The Whitecaps' next game is Friday, June 30 at home to the Portland Timbers in a 7:00pm start at Swangard Stadium. The Caps then head off for four straight games on the road.
Scoring Summary: 73' Vancouver Jay Alberts (Dave Morris) Eleven minutes after they both subbed into the game, Alberts and Morris combined to open scoring. It started with David Testo on the left, as his cross was neatly helped on by a deflection from Morris to find Alberts in front, and he blasted in from seven yards, for his second of the season.
Game Notes: The Caps started brightly, with Tony Donatelli breaking on the right in the first minute, and firing a ball that delfected behind the goalkeeper and across the face of goal dangerously. Jeff Clarke volleyed over at 8' from good position, and at 22' a free kick from Martin Nash was well held by the keeper.
Goalkeeper Tony Caig came up big for Vancouver at 24' as he came out well to save off Alen Marcina on a partial breakaway. The rebound fell to the Islander's Kormac Valdebenito in front, and he tried to make space for a shot while Caig scrambled to get back in position, but defender Adrian Cann did well to steal the ball of his bootlaces, and clear.
It was all Caps in the second half. Three minutes before his goal, Jay Alberts fired over from good position. And five minutes after his goal Alberts was set up superbly by Nash with a threaded diagonal pass into the box, but the keeper got a foot on Alberts low driven shot.
At 81', Martin Nash tested the keeper, as he blasted a loose ball from 25 yards that forced a diving save from Dan Kennedy.
Sita-Taty Matondo came into the game late, and could have scored twice. He fired inches over from 25 yards at 85' and in injury time broke in and rounded the keeper, but a defender broke up the play before he got get a shot away.
Recently signed defender Ryan Suarez came in at the half to make his home debut for the Whitecaps. He also had a good scoring chance, with a hard shot that was well saved at 86'
Midfielder Martin Nash has played 50 consecutive games, spanning three seasons.
