Charleston Battery opens pre-season camp

Charleston, SC. The USL First Division Charleston Battery opens pre-season camp this weekend with just one week until its first match versus Major League Soccer's Toronto FC. The Charleston Battery will use the week to prepare for the Carolina Challenge Cup which begins on Saturday, March 7 and also features MLS's DC United and Real Salt Lake.

In addition to the returning players this year's pre-season camp features a number of players trying to earn a roster spot including several that have been invited back after impressing at trials. The players will perform the Beep Test on Sunday before starting training proper on Monday.

The Battery's first match is On Saturday, March 7 versus Toronto FC at Blackbaud Stadium (7 PM). The game follows the opening match of the 2009 Carolina Challenge Cup featuring DC United versus Real Salt Lake (5PM).

On Wednesday March 11 the tournament continues as Toronto FC takes on DC United in the first game followed by the Battery versus Real Salt Lake at 7 PM. The tournament concludes on Saturday March 14 with Toronto versus RSL at 5 PM and the Battery versus DC United at 7 PM in a rematch of the 2008 U.S. Open Cup Final.

Tickets for the 2009 Carolina Challenge Cup are on sale now with prices frozen at 2008 levels. Fans can purchase tickets for each doubleheader or for the six match series. Tickets for single doubleheaders (includes two games) are priced at $25 Club / Box & just $15 bleacher.

Battery games to be broadcast on Sports Radio 1450 WKNT

The Charleston Battery will broadcast its 2009 away matches on Sports Radio 1450 WKNT. Sports Radio 1450 WKNT is part of the Kirkman Broadcast network that also includes ESPN Radio 910 The team. The first scheduled broadcast is the Battery's visit to the defending champions, the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, April 11 (10 PM).
