Charity gets a cool new look; teammate steps up for friend

Fans around the land are gearing up for hockey season, and Parsons' Pledge is gearing up for its next non-profit campaign. Both will be aided in their objectives by the latest in silicone statement bracelets, which sport a hockey theme and help children.

Fans can wear their charity on their sleeve - er, wrist - with the new Parsons' Pledge bracelets. The silicone bracelets come in forest green, vegas gold, and swirled, which features both colors. The bracelets are engraved with the "MRK" Memphis RiverKings logo, "Parsons' Pledge," and the number 13. Fans and supporters can get one bracelet for $3 or two bracelets for $5.

Parsons Pledge was started by Memphis RiverKings team captain Don Parsons in 2002 after finding out that his infant daughter had been born severely deaf and his father was battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The Pledge is an endowed fund with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi that currently supports Memphis Oral School for the Deaf, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Palmer Home for Children.

Defenseman Derek Landmesser, Parsons' friend and RiverKings assistant captain, spearheaded this latest idea to help the Pledge.

"Last year when everyone started wearing the bracelets, I thought, this would be great for Parsons' Pledge, because it appeals to both kids and adults," Landmesser said. "Donny does a lot and he's inspired me to help after watching him get involved. I believe in what he does.

"Coming to Memphis has opened my eyes to a ton of things. Our organization is so charitable and so involved in helping other people. I've never been on a team that gives back so much. It's really made me thank God every day that I get to do what I do and that I get to do it with this team. If I can help anyone I love to do it."
