Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Kyle Overstreet ended Friday night with a walk-off grand slam, capping a six-run ninth for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio, who stunned Corpus Christi with a 9-8 victory before a sellout crowd of 8,337 fans in the series opener at Wolff Stadium.
Overstreet, who belted a two-run shot in the second, notched the lone San Antonio (19-10) hit in the decisive ninth. The Chanclas benefited from four Framber Valdez walks and an error by third baseman Nick Tanielu, erasing what was an 8-3 Hooks lead.
The Hooks (17-12) struck first Friday night, scoring three runs against Jerry Keel. Taylor Jones crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in center for his fifth home run of the year. Josh Rojas walked and scampered home on a triple by Randy Cesar. Tanielu picked up Cesar with a sac fly to right field.
Corpus Christi built a 6-3 advantage through five. Jones notched a two-out RBI single in the third before collaborating with Yordan Alvarez on back-to-back run-scoring doubles in the fifth.
The Hooks added a pair of controversial runs in the ninth. Alex De Goti doubled to begin the frame and then stole third base. On the play there was a collision between De Goti and Ty France. De Goti was ultimately granted home plate after umpire Ryan Houchen ruled obstruction. Two batters later, Myles Straw came home when Josh Naylor mishandled an Alvarez single in left field.
Josh James struck out three in a perfect first inning but lost command and was forced to exit in the second after reaching a pitch limit.
Ralph Garza, who stranded the bases loaded in the second, teamed with Valdez to keep San Antonio off the scoreboard from the fourth through the eighth.
Valdez entered in the sixth and faced two over the minimum leading up to the ninth.
The Hooks turn to lefty Ryan Hartman for Sunday's 2:05 matinee.
